CBL World Rankings: S3-R6-D1+2

CBL World Rankings: S3-R6-D1+2
First of all, apologies for the delay. Real life once again got in the way of my CBL updates but rest assured that the rumours of my demise at the shock of seeing Rebel get some votes last week are greatly exaggerated. (Vote Rebel!)
This may be a bit of a long one (ooer!) but I’m getting Monday and Tuesday’s updates done together to save me a little bit of time and allow me to catch back up. Hope you enjoy!
Premier League
Day 1
Kicking off the penultimate round of the season, two of the top 10 ranked celebs, Margot Robbie (2nd) and Alexandra Daddario (6th) took on each other for glory. They managed a combined total of 185 votes but ended in a league draw. Robbie managed a great win in principal drawing 1 more vote than her opponent. Both remain in their current positions so far this week.
A poem from u/Turtle123712
Now here are two a turtle might really be liking,
A beautiful lifeguard and an Aussie who’s striking,
It’s Robbie for me but it’s a close one,
I certainly would be shocked if someone loses by a tonne
Day 2
The second Premier League fixture of the week had the stretched out and very wet Jennifer Lawrence take on the hottest girl next door, Anna Kendrick. Given Kendrick’s sudden Season 3 demise (falling from 2nd in the WR to 8th so far) Kendrick faced tough competition from another sufferer of Season 3 fatigue, Jennifer Lawrence. Both managed a decent vote, but Kendrick was the girl on top in this rough and tumble struggle, winning by 17 votes. Kendrick remains where she is this week whilst Lawrence, performing stronger than her former rank would suggest, climbs 194 into 60th place.
u/rocketmanx said a little prayer
Bless the Kendrick and her cuteness. Bless the coming and going of Her. May Her sexiness sweep the tourney.
League 2
Day 1
Once again, two of the comic universe’s greats draw battle against each other in a battle of DCEU vs MCU. Unfortunately this was a case of an Amazonian half-god vs a human in a World War II military outfit as Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot took on Agent Carter’s Hayley Atwell. The half-god won this battle which sees Gal Gadot climb 2 places into 20th, whilst Atwell drops 15 into 340th
u/thedemba2 got a bit lost in the moment methinks
I´m not invested on this conteast but i will be watching the results since it is a contest of Legs vs tits, this ones are good to know where the comunity is for future battles.
I´ll vote Gal because legs but my eyes will be on Hayley´s number and not on her neon....juicy....goddammit focus (gives myself a slap)
Day 2:
I had a slight interest in this having decided to put a tokens accumulator bet on this match. I considered that whilst both are popular, Dormer was likely to smash this. But the smashing machine was Bell as she truly worked her way through Dormer in attracting the votes. Kristen Bell beat Natalie Dormer by a fantastic 62 votes, seeing Bell climb 33 places in one match to 24th, whilst Dormer loses 9 WR points, but drops one into 5th place. Beckinsale takes Dormer’s former position as keeper of the 4th place throne.
u/Buck_Up_Man may be considering religion if he hasn’t already:
Can we just stop for a moment and thank the universe and any sort of higher power that we have these two incredible women on this planet? I mean, it’s a miracle
This competition is full of amazing miracles - and this pairing are at the top end of that scale.
League 3
Day 1
Sophie Turner squared up against Selena Gomez in Day 1’s League 3 fixture, and the tops were off. Sophie opting for the free-hanging cleavage which is a rarity from this phoenix, vs the more supported well rounded chest-plums of Selena Gomez. And more supported Gomez was as she won by a clear 43 votes. Despite the loss, Turner did better than expected with her vote share and climbed up one rank to 371st. Gomez stayed static in 15th.
u/The_Ugly_One82 had this interesting take
It's the hot body, weird face match-up of the decade!
Day 2
Kaley Cuoco and Megan Fox seem to be in that phase where they’re still popular, certainly attractive, but wavering in popularity against some of the more famous superstar alternatives. Sp putting them against each other in a match of attractiveness and (undoubtedly a factor) popularity was bound to be interesting. In this case, with a confident 28 point lead, it was Cuoco’s turn for glory. Cuoco climbs 20 places into 337th whilst Megan drops 4 to 363
u/hsikrut summed up what a small majority seemed to be thinking:
Megan's Fox-iness has worn off, for me. Kaleys bang is still bigger. Probably a draw, but we'll see
League 4
Day 1
Brie Larson and Victoria Justice have both been gaining in popularity as the season has progressed, so this is another great match up which was determined to bring in the votes. Brie in her black open fronted dress that shows off her b(r)est assets whilst Victoria Justice just displays everything in this competition. With only 11 votes in it, more voters wanted to carefully count the polka-dots on Victoria’s outfit than they wanted to keep Larson’s chest warm. Justice remains static in 10th place whilst Larson increases her rank by one to 28th.
u/Turtle123712 with another rhyme
Brie in black, it seems there’s not a lot better,
But justice has a background that’s much wetter,
Some Other comments say it’s chest vs the rest,
But for me in this matchup Brie is just the best
Day 2
It’s the battle of the lightly-tanned brunette with her chesticles gently cupped in her hands as she folds her arms, gazing into the voters eyes wantingly, vs the pale redhead wearing slightly more but in a very similar post and a gaze that challenges the voter to come and get some. Or perhaps I’m just imagining this being another one of those dreamlike scenarios where I have a personal choice to fulfil fantasies with. Either way, Olivia Munn and Kate McNamara battled in this round. A nice round 20 vote lead for the fiery one puts McNamara up 198 places into 55th, whilst Munn suffers a ranking injury falling 219 places into 275th. It may take her some time to recover from this.
u/rocketmanx
I'm betraying my love for redheads, but Olivia just oozes sex.
I hope he has the Kleenex ready to clean up that ooze!
League 5A
Day 1
The indestructible hot blonde cheerleader takes on the indefatigable daughter of Maleficent (see Descendants 3 – she was 23 when that was released). Hayden Pancakeday vs Dove Cameron was a battle of some of the younger celebs in the database with similar qualities. Unfortunately for Dove, Panfriedseabass managed to draw in a 13 point lead which doesn’t actually change much for her ranking as she remains in 285th. Dove, however, performed greater than expected and climbs just outside of the bottom 10 into 369th.
u/tobaccoroadeagle
this is what it sounds like when doves cry (due to not getting my vote). i don't care for her facial expressions more often than not. and even though it's been a few years, i have to assume that hayden is still very "bendy"
I wonder if she can still do the reverse crab?
Day 2
Alice Eve, the chestbumps that you could park a fire-truck between, vs Taylor Swift, whose legs you would need magic beans to climb. An unusual set of challenges but of those I would gladly attempt with either. For the league this ended as a draw, but for the rankings, the 2 vote advantage went to the two-inches between Eve’s bresticles. Alice climbs an impressive 213 places to 59th this week whilst Swift drops 1 into 34th.
u/thedemba2
the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake....oww sorry, i vote Taylor, damn legs and that face for the win always
Is it bad that I read this to the song?
League 5B
Day 1
With similar levels of skin on display, we see the black topping of Chloe’s Bennets vs the red topping of Liz’s Gillies. I could have easily sat and watched them pair of pairs battle if out for my votes, but it seems this was a very one-sided battle as Chloe Bennet clearly stole the show with a 48 vote lead. Despite the massive win, Chloe remains static at 42nd whilst Gillies drops 2 to 373rd!
u/troyale10 sees more quality in the smile she wears than the apparel. In fact, who needs clothes I ask?
Gillies coming with much more positivity into this matchup with her smile. As people say: a smile is the prettiest thing you can wear
Day 2
Jenna Coleman vs Olivia Wilde was always going to be a tough one. We have the impossible girl vs the impossible outfit. Even as a Jenna Coleman fan I found this very hard to vote. And it seems you did to with both finishing in a 70-70 tie. Coleman climbs 19 places with her performance into 298th, whilst Wilde drops 6 into 57th.
u/dal3y42x called it:
Even though Olivia Wilde has the better photo of the two, who could say no to such radiant beauty of Jenna Coleman?
I believe this fixture will end in a draw.
Transitional League
Day 1
One of hollywood’s finest beauties and one of wrestling’s finest warriors (actors?) took on each other in the battle that I would love to see in the ring. I’m not sure it would end this way in Alexa’s home territory, but Hathaway managed to pin Alexa down by 26 votes. Bliss, much to the delight of wrestling fans, climbs 3 places for her better-than-expected performance, albeit to 5th from last, whereas Hathaway drops 2 into 38th.
Another shout out to the u/Turtle123712 of many rhymes
Alexa Bliss she pins the rest,
But today she is up against Anne Hathaway’s chest,
Although Alexa’s rear is fine,
Anne will receive the vote that’s mine
Day 2
Amber Heard vs Eva Green, two of the lower ranked prime celebrities that don’t seem to be getting much luck on CBL (one in particular some may say deserves her fate, but that’s for you to decide). Fate may not be the decider though here as this round ended in a league draw, with Heard losing by a mere 2 votes! Heard only drops 1 rank this week into 370th whilst Eva Green climbs 1 into 372nd.
u/JustSoGinger remembers the spirit of CBL
Based on looks alone Amber get's my vote! I'll ignore her little flaws like, you know... domestic abuse 😶
Conference Premier A
Day 1
Adriana Lima vs Jenna Fischer is like comparing a young fit woman in a hot red bikini with a hot girl next door type woman in a silver-grey dress. And coincidentally, those are the outfits they wore in their battle pics. Not a high-voting round, Lima managed to win this one by 10 votes. Lima retains her 9th place position currently whilst Fischer actually performs better than expected so climbs 2 places into 35th.
u/The_Ugly_One82 couldn’t put his hand on what it is that he finds preferably about Jenna
On paper, Lima should have this no problem. But Fischer's got that intangible something that I always vote for.
I’m pretty sure I could find a tangible reason or two though...
Day 2
Arterton vs Kreuk should be a tough one. Both have similar body shapes according to their battle photos, but Gemma’s happens to be a little more...see through. Both have seductive eyes, but Kreuk has tidier hair. It’s all down to what the majority of voters found attractive and with 23 votes more than Kristen, Arterton won it. Gemma climbs 5 so far this week into 26th whilst Kreuk slides down the snake by 183 spaces into 282nd.
u/a_v_o_r the reddit thesaurus:
It's a very nice dress for Gemma, whilst Kristin's is more classic. But Kristin is just so pulchritudinous she makes me feel each day what real passion is, like very few could.
I found reading your comment to be very conflapinacating, especially with the use of flamancotorial language. See! I can make up clever sounding words too!
Conference Premier B
Day 1
Candice Swanepoel took on Madison Beer for the final match of day 1. It was...ah sod it, we know Candice won this by a mile! Candice and her juicy peach climbs 1 place into 17th whilst Beer also climbed 1 place into 360th.
Possibly in danger of re-running puns this season, but I am a sucker for puns, u/willrelf1992
If you ran a poel on these two, I believe Candice would come out on top. She is beautiful like a Swan, however it would Beer shame not to vote for Madison when she is looking like that. Close Madison win for me but a fairly easily Candice victory overall I imagine.
Day 2
And the final match update for today, the incredibly sexy Miranda Kerr vs the incredibly sexy Camila Mendes. Both ready to take on their pray like a Mantis on heat, but only one could win this match up. By 67 votes it was Miranda Kerr who took this one! Kerr climbs 2 places into 11th whilst Mendes suffering harsh defeat drops 2 to 368th.
Welcome to u/IX-Hermit who posted
Miranda for me, Camila seems nice though!
Also, I have no idea what I'm doing but this place looked so interesting that I had to finally make a reddit account
Stick with us and you’ll soon get drawn in voting for your favourite hot celebs!
Special mention to u/Buck_Up_Man for his rhyme:
I would, reptile in his shell
I’ll tell you why, oh yes I shall
While Kerr is fair in face and breast
C’s hips and skin are just the best

Top 10
Not a lot of movement on top so far this week with Beckinsale and Dormer giving each other a rank. Still, La Lega and two more days of Season 3 to go!
After a long day of work, then dealing with a multitude of 8 legged beings at home, typing up today’s write up has been exhausting, so I hope it’s been enjoyable reading. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

TIFU by looking after my daughter and subsequently missing out on a large amount of money

Obligatory "didn't happen today" but around 4-5 years ago. Just came across a post that reminded me of this heartbreaking story.
To give some context, we hadn't long had my daughter and she wasn't sleeping through properly. For anyone who doesn't have kids, take note!!
We had been having a very rough couple of days as she wasn't sleeping very well at all. I volunteered to cover any problems in the evening/night.
I am avid football fan (not American football, proper football), and fancy a bet from time to time. I had got into a rhythm of putting on a small bet on an accumulator every other weekend (like £1-£2 at a time). Basically, you make a bet against many different matches and the prize money increases based on the size and type of bets. "Cash Out" betting was a thing, but wasn't picked up by the bookies I used but I didn't mind much.
Moving on to the day in question, it's about 3am after finally getting my daughter to sleep. I was exhausted, I could barely keep my eyes open. Just before bed, I check the football fixtures for the weekend. I couldn't believe my luck, every premier League game was being played on the weekend!
I quickly wake up and get a piece of paper, write down all my predictions and set my bet up - supplementimg the bet with other leagues to the point I maxed the accumulator out at 25 games. I banged on a bet and the odds came out at £15k+. I was pissing myself in excitement. I slam the "place bet" button.
I check my bet Sunday, mid afternoon........ My heart was pounding out my chest, every single bet came in!!! The only game left was Tottenham Hotspurs Vs Swansea which was being played on Sunday. I had bet that Spurs would beat Swansea
Ladies and gentlemen, I am on the verge of winning £15k+ on the back of a £1 bet!! Honestly, those few hours realising I was gonna get such a windfall after a newborn baby - the feeling is unreal.
And this is where it all goes wrong....
As I check my bet, my heart practically stops. In my sleep deprived state I had placed the bet on the wrong team. I meant to place a bet on Spurs, but accidentally bet on Swansea to win. For context, Swansea were awful that season! Now all my hopes rest on a team that were struggling.
I watched hopelessly as Spurs best Swansea ... I could have cried, honestly, I still think about it sometimes.
So there you have it, my chance to get a decent windfall and make our lives a little easier was fucked by sleep deprivation.
I try not to hold it against my daughter ...
TL:DR - Sleep deprived, I placed an incorrect bet and missed out on a large windfall

Some obscure facts for liverpool fans,Whats you thoughts?

The first ever game shown on Match of the Day was Liverpool vs Arsenal in August 1964. Liverpool also featured in the first-ever game televised in colour when they took on West Ham in November 1969.
Kenny Dalglish was the first ever player-manager in professional English football(div 1). Not a bad appointment: during his five-year stint the club as player manager won the league three times and the FA Cup twice.
Anfield was named after the Irish town of Annefield in Wexford, by the then Irish mayor of Liverpool who bought the land where the stadium now sits. The Kop is named after the Spion Kop, a hill in South Africa where many local soldiers died in the Boer War.
At its peak, the Kop could hold 30,000 spectators – all standing. Today it holds just under 12,500 seated.
The famous ‘THIS IS ANFIELD’ sign was erected by Bill Shankly to instil fear in the opposition players. Current Liverpool players are forbidden to touch the sign by coach Jurgen Klopp until the club wins a trophy. They can now !
A 1915 fixture between Liverpool and Manchester United was rigged for United to win 2-0. 4 Liverpool and 4 Manchester players were banned for life when the betting scandal was uncovered.
One of Liverpool’s least successful transfers was that of Danish keeper Michael stamsgaard He somehow managed to dislocate his shoulder while setting up an ironing board and was never able to play a game for the club as a result.
Xavi Alonso held the record for longest Premier League goal by an outfield player (63 yards against Newcastle) until former Red Charlie Adam popped one in from 66 yards when playing for Stoke against Chelsea.
Liverpool has been involved in numerous English record transfers: Keegan to Hamburg for £500K; Rush to Juventus for £3.2M; Collymore from Forest for £8.5M and most recently Coutinho to Barcelona for £105M.

Positive comments from the 'How Did _ Play' thread

Got a bit of time so thought I'd put together some of the positive comments from the 'How Did _ Play' thread in one place. Maybe this could be a regular feature if there's enough interest.
Link to thread
WHU
Yarmolenko - He was good. His assist was a very good pass. His technique throughout the game was good. He was finding good passes and first touches. But there was a bit of lack of work rate. He also missed a good chance to score but was otherwise good.

LEI
Perez - I transferred him out this week so you can bet I’m pretty annoyed but I thought he played well. Was essentially a second striker up top with vardy. If they keep up The same formation I don’t see why it wouldn’t be great to bring him in for Leicester’s good fun if fixtures.

Barnes - Fantastic. Had the freedom of the left hand side to work with but was willing to drift inside when he felt like it. Great chemistry with Chilwell, big part in why Chilwell had some much fun today playing plenty of 1-2s with each other. Probably the 1 Leicester player who deserved more attacking returns than they got today. Could very well have secured a starting spot for now with the form he's in at least. More returns than last season in the Premier League already in less than half the minutes.

Vardy - They chatted shit so you know what happened. He missed a great chance as well and had two other instances in which he was a certain goal but the pass/cross wasnt where it should have been. Theres nothing else to say after a hattrick

Chilwell - Man of the match. Linked up very well with Barnes down the left hand side and made some great driving runs forward. He put in more crosses than anyone and his delivery was absolutely top notch. Defensively did what little needed to be done

CHE
Hudson-Odoi - Drove forward with great vision. Went down easily for the yellow but beat his man multiple times. Unlucky with the end product today but should have a starting spot with his performance (disputed comment)

Tomori - Class performance, great pace but making few mistakes and fortunately Burnley finishing isn't that good. Conceded two goals but Burnley deserve that.

Pulisic - Pretty damn good. Quite direct and a little bit selfish -- good for FPL. He probably could have passed to Abraham once or twice but instead went for goal (and scored). Was less selfish after his hat trick. Also seemed to tire out a bit late in the game when Chelsea were comfortably ahead. Problem is Chelsea has a number of good wingers which makes it hard to know who will start.

Willian - Good performance overall. His form has been good recently. He has started every game since the second. Definitely the most nailed down winger as Lampard prefers him for his experience and work rate.

MCI
Sterling - Excellent. Star performance. Didn't put a foot wrong, scored, could have had several assists, take-ons for days down the left side. The entire City attack went that way. (disputed by a user, although I thought he had a great game)

Mendy - Wonderful. Not making mistakes, looks spry, perpetually remains an attacking threat. Assist, Clean Sheet + 2 Bonus Points for a double-digit haul. (taken away after comment)

David Silva - Great as always. A bargain for his price. My ML leader has him and it pisses me off every game week cause Silva always contributes somehow.

BRI
Connolly - He did well. Earned two fouls which got him the two assists. Second one was a bit lucky. He was also very lively during the game and dangerous. But was just missing the final touch. His movement was great. There's also a problem with him that Trossard is now back and he was amazing, so Potter might rotate, and Connolly is not nailed, but he's priced at 4.5m so he's not expected to return big points. Depends also what formation Potter chooses to go forward with (was 4-4-2 today, but has been 5-2-3 and 4-3-3). But surely he's much better option than Greenwood at that 4.5m range.

Maupay - He's brilliant imo. His head is always 100% in the game. I've seen him now 5+ times. He tracks back without any questions asked for his team and is a great false nine team player. Finds his team mates open, tries to beat the offside line... sometimes his final ball is lacking but he's doing well. Also he's their penalty taker. Might be tougher to get big point returns with him because Brighton is battling for relegation for now but for 6.0-6.5m there's not a better option right now in the league.

Tossard - He looked amazing when he came in. His left footed crosses were brilliant even though he's right footed. But I would probably hold for now in terms of getting him in FPL because of the teams Brighton are facing and the fact that Potter has been switching the formation, so he's not nailed yet because Connolly has been doing well.

BUR
McNeil - Burnley's best player by a mile. Dribbling was great, but some quality crosses in. Burnley's most creative player. Only thing letting him down is Burnley won't score many goals

ARS
Tierney - Got forward a ridiculous amount, a graphic was showed at half time where his average position was near that of Aubameyang's. Put in a few crosses, one in particular found Laca for a stinging shot that the keeper dove at full stretch to save. Overall, looks like a very promising prospect for attacking returns, and seems to have the starting berth nailed. At 5.4, a worthy consideration indeed.

Pepe - Constant menace from set-pieces, both goals were created from his corners, and the goal ruled out by VAR was again created from his set pieces. From open play he wasn't great, didn't seem to link up with Auba and Laca very well.

MUN
Martial - Got a goal with a great finish. Could have had a hat-trick with Krul saving a header from 2 yards and a penalty as well. Also, missed a difficult 1v1 which was well saved by Krul. Great at linking up play and United look much better with him. Definitely consider him at 7.5m OOP, and with Pogba returning, he will definitely return

James - His runs and crosses has been to the point last 2 games, especially the 2 assists vs Pool, and today vs Norwich where tough 1st time crosses to play. If Rash-Tony-James play upfront, there is potential as FPL assets given United's fixtures. But it is United, so consistency remains to be seen.

Rashford - Him and martial linked up very well. Rashford was very energetic and direct. I brought martial and I still think he is the better choice though, due to him being a mid and cheaper.

Wan-Bissaka - a nasty, unnecessary challenge for a YC in 1st half, but other than that his tackles and interceptions were superb. Spider Obi-Wan. United concede very poor goals at times, so still could be an expensive asset.

McTominay - My man of the match imo. Man was everywhere at times and looks like the only player who just goes for the shot other than fred, he drills it low usually and it went in this time. From a player standpoint united would be lost without him. From a FPL standpoint he's not the best but for his price he's good for a goal once in a while + bonus points. His value has gone up and I'm sure it will again if he continues like this, he's definitely our best midfielder other than Pogba and will be playing a little higher till end of December once Pogba comes back

AVL
Grealish - Best player in the team imo, but can't be superb always (ie how he was with Brighton). Although at the end his nerves kinda cracked a bit, so had to be substituted

McGinn - Nearly scored at the end with a shot that hit the post. Had a shot in first half where he forced Ederson into a decent save. Always seems to have good efforts on goal regardless of the opposition, has a sweet left foot.

SHU
Lundstram - Continuing to live up to the hype, getting himself into the box, creating chances. Should have had an assist today but Robinson shit the bed with his header.

Henderson - Didn’t put a foot wrong, made some good saves and commanded his area well from corners etc. Couldn’t do much about the goal.

WOL
Traore - Man of the match for me. Great runs, some good crosses (one where Jota missed the goal). Creating a lot for Wolves and his partnership with Doherty looked better this time around.

LIV
TAA - Massive. Didn't mistouch the ball once. Seems the whole crowd gets excited when the ball is played to him. Liverpool drew tons of free kicks, and he takes them all. Unlucky not to get 5 assists in my eyes lol

Mane - His effort and physicality makes him more consistent than Salah. Salah can be brilliant but also have games where he is off; Mane consistently works incredibly hard and his physicality means that even when he has an off game, he still heavily contributes and is involved in the attack. the penalty he won today and his motm performance was a great example of that; overall, his touches and finishing weren't quite there today, but through sheer effort and physicality, he still make a huge impact on the game.

Firmino - Good, had a few decent chances and always involved in the attack. Might've had an assist too. An interesting option for his price, if Liverpool keep playing the way they did today he looks nice indeed

Robertson - Best Liverpool player on the pitch today imo. Incessant crossing and pushing up of the ball.

TOT
Gazzaniga - Massive. They weren't missing Lloris at all

Kane - It was a good performance. Out Battled Lovren and did his fair bit against Vvd and Fabinho. Often left isolated as Spurs sat deep but was always agile with balls through

Welcome to the triumphant return of the Premier League Previews, a series where a fan gives an overview of his team for your perusal, and I get an excuse to take pot-shots at other clubs. This will run until the eve of the Premier League, taking a look at each club in turn. Today we're out of London but paradoxically still on the Tube line as we visit Watford.

It's safe to say most Watford fans were apprehensive going into the 2018/19 season. Javi Gracia becoming the first head coach since the Championship to remain in charge from the previous season was a plus, but only the permanent acquisition of loanee Deulofeu and goalkeeper Ben Foster looked to improve the first team, with fans crying out for a striker and centre back. Paul Merson and Phil McNulty each proceeded to predict Watford's relegation for the fourth successive year.
However, the Hornets came flying out of the traps, winning their first four league games, including a comeback to win 2-1 against Tottenham. This led to Gracia being awarded the Manager of the Month award for August. Despite continuing to put in largely good performances, some poor finishing and defensive errors meant that Watford won just two of their next twelve games, slipping from the lofty heights of 3rd to a season low of 12th. During this time they were knocked out of the League Cup on penalties by Tottenham, in a game bizarrely played at Stadium MK due to the unavailability of Wembley or the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
December, January and February brought better fortunes, with Watford only losing three games in all competitions in this time, all to top six clubs, despite playing 9 out of their first 11 games of 2019 away in all competitions. The depth in the squad was utilised in the FA Cup, with the team reaching the quarter final without putting out a full strength side, much to the anger of Chris Sutton. A full strength team was played for this quarter final against Crystal Palace, who Watford beat 2-1 for the third time in the season to progress to Wembley. In the league, the Hornets were embroiled in the race for Europa League football, periodically reaching the hallowed 7th spot before swiftly dropping out. A 1-0 win at home against Marco Silva's Everton was a highlight as Watford continued to struggle against the top six.
The FA Cup Semi Final was the match of the season for Watford. Up against a Wolves side they were also competing for 7th place with, Watford found themselves 2-0 down with 11 minutes to go, with goals from Doherty and Jimenez, the latter celebrating with a mask which drew comment from the usually reserved Troy Deeney. However, a sublime lob from Gerard Deulofeu gave Watford hope before a stoppage time Deeney penalty took the tie to extra time, where Deulofeu added a second to take Watford to their 2nd cup final in history. In the league, a 2-1 win against Huddersfield put Watford in 7th with three out of four games left at home. If they won all these they were guaranteed European football. u/TheJeck, not wanting to miss a minute of the race for Europe, ran a mile from Watford Junction station to make it to the fixture against Southampton for kick off - only for Shane Long to score the fastest goal in Premier League history. Twat. Watford drew 1-1, then lost 2-1 to Wolves to effectively end our hopes of coming second. A 3-0 loss to Chelsea confirmed that we would take just 3 points from games with the top six, and a 4-1 defeat to West Ham meant that Watford finished 11th, just the third match this season they finished outside the top ten.
However, there was still hope of a first trophy in the clubs history and a Europa League spot to boot through the FA Cup final. With Jose Holebas' suspension rescinded, Watford were full strength going into their match with league champions Manchester City, who were gunning for an unprecedented domestic treble. However, it was not to be, with City running out 6-0 winners. Regardless, at 5-0 down the Watford fans all started chanting and waving fans, showing what a successful season it had been in their eyes.

This Season

It has been a quieter transfer window than usual for Watford, with just two arrivals at the time of writing. The Hornets have been crying out for a new centre back since last summer and Craig Dawson brings Premier League experience at a low price. Tom Dele-Bashiru is a promising young midfielder who didn't quite make the grade at Manchester City. Watford are also currently in negotiations for Rennes winger Ismalia Sarr for what would be a club record fee, which have been going on for several weeks, making it quite the Sarr-ga (I'm not even sorry). In January Watford will finally complete the signing of Fluminese striker Joao Pedro, widely seen to be a hugely promising talent and already being watched by several of the world's biggest clubs. The fact that Watford have already secured his signature is a testament to the scouting network in South America.
In terms of departures, only Miguel Britos has been released from the first team squad, with veteran goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who was "99% sure" he would retire, signing on for another year. Some young players have been loaned out, most notably promising defender Ben Wilmot to Swansea. In terms of business to complete, Watford will want to finally get the Sarr signing over the line as well as find a loan for youngsters Cucho Hernandez and Pontus Dahlberg.
With Javi Gracia having been at the helm for one and a half years and arguably the most important transfer business of keeping the likes of Doucoure and Deulofeu taken care of, expectations going into the new season are higher than they have been since the 1980s. Relegation is seen as a possibility but not a real concern, with fans believing we will finish mid table or possibly top half.

Tom Dele-Bashiru Perm Man City Watford Free

3 players to watch out for
Gerard Deulofeu
The La Masia product made his loan at Vicarage Road permanent last summer, and despite injury disrupting the start of his season and a new position at striker ended up top scorer, with some eye catching performances such as his hat trick against Cardiff and his super-sub appearance in the FA Cup Semi Final. With a full pre season and more positional familiarity, he can achieve big things this season.
Etienne Capoue
Last year's fan's Player of the Season is a criminally underrated player by non Watford supporters - the work he does in the defensive midfield brings the best out of players around him. Has struck up an excellent partnership with Doucoure over the past 18 months which should continue into this season.
Domingos Quina
Doubt he'll be starting at home to Brighton, but Quina has all the potential to be a Premier League star. Signed from West Ham on deadline day last year after turning up in the car park ten minutes before the deadline, Quina showed his creatively, comfort with the ball at his feet and ability to hit long range shots with either foot in his handful of appearances last season, and will keep the first team firmly on their toes.
What the fans think
Thanks to /Watford_FC for their help.
How do you think this season will go?
I expect us to finish around mid table. Very quiet transfer window in both regards so far. We have all of the same squad that got us to the cup final and should really have got us into Europe if Deeney, Cathcart and Foster hadn't decided to shit the bed in the final few games of the season; however the other teams around us have significantly strengthened though hard to see us finishing above West Ham, Everton, Wolves, Leicester now.
I’d say we will end up roughly in the same place as last season. We added Craig Dawson, so our defense should be better, but I don’t think we’ll have as good run of form against outside of the top 6 as we did last season. I’d say we will end around 9th place, maybe have a decent cup run again as well.
Last season was fantastic, and everyone will be looking to build on 11th. Another cup run is probable, but I think we'll struggle to improve much in the league. We'll be safe from relegation but are lacking some quality and depth compared to Everton, Wolves and Leicester. In my opinion we'll be fighting for top half with West Ham, Bournemouth and whichever of the promoted clubs hits the ground running, with some strong home games against the top six (Liverpool excluded). A cup exit in the semis to a top 6 team.
Which player is going to be your star of the season and why?
I'd have to go for Deulofeu. He grew into his striker role over the Season, building up a decent partnership with Deeney later on in the Season. He is woeful in the air, isn't as positionally aware like Gray by drifting out wide at times when he needs to stay more central and has a penchant for doing too much rather than take the easier option but he's very quick, has developed a fairly good finish and becoming more consistent in his performances, slowly but surely. Still has a good amount of work to do but made leaps and bounds last Season in converting his role out wide to a central one.
Doucoure. He was usurped by Capoue last season in terms of being our best cm, or even our best player. If he wants to go to a UCL team, as he has stated, then he needs another top season, like he did on 17/18, and I think he will. Deulofeu will want to prove last seasons scoring antics weren’t a fluke. Could also be a breakout season for Domingos Quina.
Star of the season will be Gerard Deulofeu of course but I think Etienne Capoue will quietly have another season as one of the best midfielders outside the top 6 and the same for Ben Foster being one of the best keepers outside the top 6. Del boy being our top scorer. Another name to mention that I hope gets some serious game time and becomes a star of the cups is Domingos Quina, very excited whenever this lad plays.
How do you think the team will line up?
Gracia predominantly uses 4-2-2-2, and has sparingly used 4-2-3-1 last Season. Against QPR in the Friendly very recently 5-3-2 (Wing backs) but we will be using 4-2-2-2 again this Season as our main formation. This is our current squad and probable line up, assuming we sign Sarr.
Foster will be number one but Bachmann has been brought back to challenge. Javi typically plays 4 at the back, expect Dawson to partner Cathcart with some fullback rotation. Deeney and Deulofeu will start together up front most weeks; we rely heavily on their mentality and skill respectively. I'd expect a flat 4 midfield, but Javi does tinker from time to time. Hughes-Capoue-Doucouré-Sarr(?) most likely, with some shakeup to fit in Quina or play Hughes more centrally.
I expect the exact same 4-2-2-2 as last season, but with Dawson substituting in for Mariappa which will look something like this. If Sarr does come as has been strongly suggested, I expect he will take one of Hughes / Pereyra's positions.

Wrap Up

by NickTM

The Manager: I've got to say, Javi Gracia is probably one of the least notable coaches in the league to me. He's just... there. There's no doubting his experience, though, having had spells in Spain, Greece and Russia before plying his trade in the Prem. Last season was about as good as a generally mid-table club can hope for; never in any danger of relegation whatsoever, a highest league finish since the formation of the Premier League, a cup final run and all done with a positive net spend.
The Team: Watford bring to bear a hugely multinational squad, with 17 nations represented in the first team squad alone. A well-balanced side, the hugely-experienced trio of Ben Foster, Craig Cathcart and Adrian Mariappa make up the goalkeeper and centre of defence respectively. Gracia favours something approaching a 4-2-2-2, presumably partially as a way of including all of his talented central midfielders, and so Aboulaye Doucoure, Etienne Capou, Will Hughes and Roberto Pereyra can all be found on the pitch at the same time. Up front, the mercurial Gerard Deulofeu supports Troy Deeney, who is entering his tenth season at the club. It's a strong side across the board, but despite the excellence in the centre of the pitch questions might be being asked of old warhorse Deeney if he gets off to a poor start given his 9 league goal return last season. The addition of Craig Dawson is likely a good one given Mariappa has generally found most of his success at Prem level as a rotational utility player, but it's probably fair to say Cathcart and Dawson comprise a pairing that is merely OK rather than particularly good. It's lucky, then, that Ben Foster remains one of the better keepers in the Premier League behind them.
Why to like them: Gerard Deulofeu is a delight to watch, and to an extent that also includes the entire team as individuals. There are a lot of players in this Watford side that can pull off moments of magic, be it a splitting pass or a tricky run. You've also absolutely got to respect a manager who casually pulls out a 4-2-2-2 like his team is a classic Brazil side. Watford also properly commit to a proper colour scheme and motif but refuse to restrict themselves to boring features like 'only stripes' or the like, which thematically I absolutely appreciate given the ongoing plague of boring strips in football. Isaac Success has a cracking name.
Why to dislike them: Watford fans, lemme be honest, you lot have some problems. First on the list is probably that weird way you're trying to start rivalries with other fanbases because nobody cares about your team. I've seen some Watford fans sniping at Everton of all clubs, which, let's be honest, would result in the worst-named rivalry of all time. You just know that the press would make it the Z-cars derby. There's also the way you all seem to have 'ackshuyally I think you'll find it was only affray' bound to a macro. And then there was the reaction to the FA Cup final, in which the absolutely embarrassing capitulation the team displayed on the pitch was glossed over by that most shithouse of obfuscations: "our fans outsung theirs!". Come on now. You can do better. I believe in you, Watford fans.
Also of note is the ongoing delusion by some members of the media that Watford is somehow in London, which isn't their fault but somehow still irritates. Speaking of the media, Troy Deeney's also a shit cunt who you absolutely know is lining himself up for a post-playing media career as 'the controversial one' on a panel of pundits.
Summary: Watford look like they're in a great place for the foreseeable future, but there's a very definite glass ceiling on the midtable of the Premier League. Their ambition in that regard will be to make it into Europe, but that's as unlikely to manifest consistently as it is for anyone outside of the top six. If you look downwards rather than up, it also seems unlikely for Watford to really be at a risk of relegation given the strength of their side. Much more likely would be a pop at domestic silverware, and Gracia seems to be willing to commit to a deep cup run once more. Whilst cups are by nature unbalanced and risky, a team that's anchored in midtable is often one of the better bets for getting to the final given their ability to play first teamers without risk of losing too much on weekends. Expect Watford to go for it again as they bounce around somewhere between 13th and 8th.

Where to Watch
Pre-Match Conference: Jurgen Klopp
Preview
  • Liverpool return to action on Sunday, with Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea visiting Anfield in the Premier League.
  • The Reds come into the game buoyed from a 2-0 UEFA Champions League win over FC Porto and will be out to maintain their place at the top of the table with victory over the Blues.
  • Chelsea were also victorious in midweek, as they beat Slavia Prague 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. Sarri's men were not at their best, but the victory was their fourth in a row in all competitions.
  • Liverpool top the table by two points from Manchester City, although they have played a game more than Pep Guardiola's side and know they can't afford to drop points if they are to be crowned champions.
  • Chelsea should provide a stiff test and are also in need of all three points as they continue their battle with Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester United for a place in the top four.
Statements
Jurgen Klopp:
  • "I feel the positive energy. It's a massive change from surprise we are up there to getting used to it and getting more confident.
  • "The five or 10 seconds after the Tottenham equaliser [at Anfield two weeks ago] was the best reaction in the stadium.
  • "We really feel as one with the supporters as a whole group. You don't walk alone, you're never alone in these situations.
  • "We are trying to keep this dream alive and at the moment it's all good."
Maurizio Sarri:
  • "To face Liverpool is going to be difficult for us but every game now is difficult.
  • "We know well the risks of this match but we also know that when we are able to play at 100% of our potential, we can gain points anywhere.
  • "We are in a very good physical and mental condition right now."
Match Facts
  • Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 37 Premier League games at Anfield - only once in their top-flight history have they had a longer unbeaten home run (63 between Feb 1978-Dec 1980).
  • Chelsea have lost their last five Premier League away games against fellow 'big six' opponents, including all three this season by an aggregate score of 1-11. However, the Blues have won three of their last four away league games against sides starting the day top, including a 2-0 victory at Anfield in April 2014.
  • Chelsea have won three Premier League games in a row for the first time since September 2018, when they won their first five matches in the competition under Maurizio Sarri.
  • Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge netted the equaliser for his side at Stamford Bridge in the reverse fixture back in September; the only player to previously net both home and away against the Blues within the same campaign was Fabio Borini, who did so for Sunderland during the 2015-16 season.
  • Only three of the last 32 visiting managers have managed to taste victory in their first Premier League trip to Anfield (W3 D5 L24); Louis van Gaal in March 2015, Slaven Bilic in August 2015 and most recently, Paul Clement in January 2017.
  • Roberto Firmino has scored seven goals in his last six Premier League home games for Liverpool. However, the Brazilian has only faced Manchester United (8) and Everton (7) more often than Chelsea (5) without finding the net in the Premier League.
  • Chelsea's Eden Hazard has had a hand in more goals than any other Premier League player this season (28 - 16 goals and 12 assists). The only league season in which the Belgian has been involved in more goals was in 2011/12 with Ligue 1 club Lille (36).
Head to Head
  • Liverpool have not won any of their last six Premier League home games against Chelsea, drawing four and losing two of those - they have never endured a longer winless run against an opponent in the competition.
  • The Blues have only lost twice in their last 16 meetings with the Reds in all competitions, and both of those defeats came at Stamford Bridge.
  • Chelsea have already tasted victory at Anfield this season, winning 2-1 in the EFL Cup third round. They have never won twice away to Liverpool in the same season.
  • Liverpool wins: 77 Draws: 41 Chelsea wins: 63
Team News
Liverpool
  • Liverpool will welcome back left-back Andrew Robertson from a suspension that ruled him out of the midweek Champions League win over Porto.
  • Joe Gomez was named on the bench on Tuesday and is in line for a first appearance since early December, though Dejan Lovren performed well at the back against Porto. Gomes is with U23s so definitely out for today's game.
Chelsea
  • Chelsea have the full squad to choose from, except left-back Emerson, who missed Thursday's game, will be assessed before the game.
Predicted Lineups
Liverpool XI:
  • Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Milner, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mané
Chelsea XI:
  • Kepa; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Emerson; Kante, Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek; Hudson-Odoi, Higuain, Hazard

The Monday After: Thursday Edition GW35-36

Hey guys,
It’s been a few weeks of premier league madness since the last ‘Monday After’ post. Hopefully you all managed to get through the doubles unscathed and out the other side with a green arrow! As the hysteria dies down, we look towards GW36 with fresh eyes, a fresh team (for those who recently used their WC) and still loads of points to play for. So this post is going to highlight the teams we should have in our thoughts, the teams we definitely shouldn’t, and what to do with the Triple Captain Chip for those that are still to use it.
Here’s my team and OR update. After GW34 I had 2 suspended players, 2 Brighton defenders and no Sterling. To fix these issues I decided to gamble on a huge -12 that didn’t quite pay off. Foster lost out on a clean, whereas Ryan managed a goalless draw against Wolves. Eriksen scored the only goal against Brighton whereas Sterling managed just an assist. So I’m actually 16 points worse off than I would’ve been! A calculated risk but a risk all the same. I’m not down and out just yet, though. My OR is just over 2k.
If you’re interested, I use my twitter to go over all of my transfer ideas, fixture planning processes, captaincy options and thoughts on FPL news. I’m quite active and my DMs are open so if you’re looking for more info than just these posts, you know where to find me!
Here’s some useful links that help me write-up these TMA posts:
Premier League Fixtures – A great way to line up the fixtures for the specific gameweeks you want to see. Orders the teams from best fixtures to worst.
Player Analysis by Performance – Amazing tool that compares every player based on Shooting, Creativity and Attacking involvement. Options for looking at any combination of teams too.
Player stats per Game – Great for looking at team stats per player for Offensive and Defensive plays. Also shows heat maps!
Teams to Look At
Liverpool - Every week that goes by I wish more and more for the chance to own 4 or 5 Liverpool players in my team. There are so many great options and I want them all! Sadly, we can only have three, and because we're so close to the end of the season, the ones we choose now will probably be with us until the end, for better or worse. Salah (13.2) is still the highest priced player in the league, but his current ownership % is nearly half that of teammate Mane (10.0), who has been playing extremely well, particularly at home. With his slump now over, however, Salah is quite enticing for a home game against relegated Huddersfield, but if his cost is just too much for your team without taking hits, then maybe it’s best to stick with Mane. For less than the cost of Salah, you could get Robertson (6.8) and TAA (5.6) in your team, which may actually be a better choice than two attackers based on how consistent they’ve recently been in defence. The only caveat in that is the rotation before the Champions League games. Trent and Robbo did look quite tired during the last match, so you could opt for Van Dijk (6.6) instead for the guaranteed starts. Last but not least, we have Firmino (9.3), who in the last 3 games has been 2nd highest striker for Shots, Shots on Target and Chance Creation. He’s first for Key passes too. If you can’t afford Salah, and have cash to spare for a striker, he is always an option. Maybe not captain-able over the midfielders, but a decent option none-the-less.
Man City - With the Champions League out the way, and another KDB injury, it’s actually easier than ever to predict the Man City line up. Sterling (11.6) has played every game in recent weeks and continues to return for his owners with no signs of slowing up. Aguero (11.8) is much the same as he’s been all season: Played when fit. The only difference now is he isn’t getting subbed at 60 mins. Bernardo Silva (7.6) continues to improve and has looked good recently, getting into the box more, and taking more shots than he usually does. Could be an option for those looking to triple up in City attack. Other attackers are less nailed and so may be worth avoiding so close to the end of the season, but Ederson (5.6) has played out of his mind recently and deserves a look in here for those wanting a way into the City defence. He's managed save and bonus points due to his efficiency between the sticks, and is the main reason for the Cityzen's recent cleansheets. Other options include Laporte (6.1), the DGW God, who has a bit more attacking threat for half a million more than the Goal Keeper. Mendy (6.1) is unfortunately still a rotation risk and should be kept at arms length. If you’ve got nothing to lose, though, he might be fun to own. You could even get Alonso in as well for a Holy Trinity reunion.
Wolves - If City win the FA Cup, 7th place means a Europa League spot (I think!). Wolves are currently sitting in 7th, exactly 1 point ahead of Watford who they play next. We all know what happened to Burnley this year with Europe troubles, but a newly promoted team getting European football is surely an amazing achievement worth fighting for. Wolves have two good fixtures before playing LIV in GW38, so those with just one asset could think about bringing in a few more. The usual suspects are still contenders for your starting XI: Jimenez (6.9) is highly owned and is still a rank killer despite his recent dip in form. Jota (6.2) has came leaps and bounds since the start of the season and has been giving it his all these last few games. Passes the eye test and has amazing stats to back it up. He’s some player! Doherty (5.3) has been playing well recently, managing to get on the end of a set piece for his goal against Arsenal, but more importantly kept a clean sheet against Brighton! If you don’t already have him, though, it may be best to go for Jonny (4.3) who’s been showing some real promise these last few games. One to consider if you aren’t feeling like holding on to a Dunk or Duffy. The rest of the Wolves midfield are a bit hit and miss, and with so many decent ways to spend your money, it may be best to look elsewhere.
Everton - What a turnaround ending to their season! We all ditch Everton, casting them to the fire, and they rise like extremely frustrating phoenixes that we wish could have started this incredible form before we got rid of them. But then if that happened it wouldn’t be FPL, would it? Regardless of the past, their recent form surely must be considered. Despite his recent knock, Digne (5.3) is set to play this weekend and looks like the best asset on the team. Set pieces, clean sheet potential, loves a cross and loves a goal. What more can you ask for? A better GW38 fixture maybe, but with Spurs potentially locked in 3rd place by GW38, it shouldn't be a terrible match up. Siggy (7.3) is another player in form, and has found the consistency we’ve been waiting for all season: 6 returns in 8 games. With Richarlison (6.4) flagged for injury, our Siggurdsson will be looked to as the teams main goal threat, and hopefully won’t be dampened by Richarlison’s absence. Either way, he’s been a monster lately and you could do a lot worse than grabbing him for the last 3 games of the season.
Teams to be Wary of
Tottenham - Spurs are currently in a great position. They’re sitting in 3rd, 3 points ahead of 4th place Chelsea. They’re unable to catch Liverpool and City, but they have much better fixtures than Chelsea and Manchester United (6th) who play each other in GW36. They also have better fixtures than 5th place Arsenal who play Leicester away and Brighton who are fighting to stay in the top flight. The only difficult fixture for Spurs is Everton, but like I said above, with a win against West Ham and Bournemouth, 3rd place will be confirmed before the Everton game even starts. So what does this mean for FPL? It means uncertainty. It means rotation. If it wasn’t for a few injuries and a suspension, I’d wager that no Spurs attacker was safe from a benching against West Ham considering they have just two days to rest before Ajax on Tuesday. As it stands, we know that due to his yellow card against City, Son (8.8) won’t be playing in the first round of the Semi Final, so he’s safe for now. Eriksen has played 90 minutes in every game since GW20, so he should be okay too (we hope). Every other player has been rotated often enough to be concerned, so keep this in mind if you’re planning on transferring anyone in. There is definitely points to be had with Spurs assets, we should just be wary of who we’re choosing.
Man Utd - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ‘New Manager, New United’ hype is now officially dead. The 4-0 loss was hard to watch, and the defensive errors leave very little to be desired. Add in the rotation we’ve seen in the last few games and Man United have now become an FPL minefield. With only the Chelsea game to show improvement before their tasty fixtures in GW37 and 38, we may have to just avoid the Red Devils altogether. We can usually count on Huddersfield and Cardiff to botch their attempts on goal, though, so if you really want a piece of the Man Utd action, you could wait for GW37 and then go for a cheeky punt on Shaw (5.0) or Lindeloff (5.0) perhaps. Just don’t go selling the whole farm for under performing, lowly owned players who’ll just end up hurting your rank. We’ll reassess after Chelsea.
Leicester - Now I know this may be controversial, but I’m not sure that Vardy (9.0) does like playing against the bigger teams. He certainly has played well against the top 6 in years past, but in this season his ratio of returns against bottom teams vs top teams shows a Vardy who loves pushing around the little guy. We haven’t seen Rodgers take on the big dogs either, so that coupled with the huge price tag; I don’t think I’d want to own Vardy much longer. Arsenal’s horrible defensive form is pretty enticing I’ll admit, but after that it may be a good idea to look for another way to spend your cash. I don’t think I need to mention Leicester defenders here, and other than Vardy, there isn’t much to say about other attacking assets. Not worth taking hits to get rid of anyone before the Arsenal game, but certainly plans to move them to other assets might be worth while.
Plans And Strategies
Triple Captain Chip - What a headache! At least with our Wild Card and Bench Boost we knew roughly when to use them, but the TC can be such a minefield! It’s a good time as any to remember to be mindful that a captain can always blank despite the odds, and we shouldn’t be too disheartened if the TC doesn’t pan out (RIP Sane GW25). Having said that, let’s take a look at the options. You’ll notice I’ve only highlighted Liverpool or Man City, and that’s because I feel that they have the highest ceiling for points this close to the end of the season and with such a close title race.
Mane/Salah home vs HUD (GW36)
Sterling away vs BUR (GW36)*
Aguero/Sterling home vs LEI (GW37)
Aguero/Sterling away vs BRI (GW38)**
*No Aguero due to poor away form
**Only if BRI are already safe/relegated
Any of these games has the potential for big hauls, but just know that the vast majority are going to be picking Mane/Salah vs HUD for GW36. It’s the best fixture on paper and a must win game for the Reds. If you’re looking to stay the course and coast through on a similar OR to what you have now, then maybe your best bet is to follow the pack so as not to fall behind. If you’re looking to get ahead and need a differential pick, even picking GW37 or 38 would provide an opportunity to jump up in the rankings, but only if GW36 turns out to be a dud. It’s a risk that could pay off big or see you fall even further back than you are now. Good luck!
End of Season Guide - A few key points kept cropping up while writing this article today, so I’d thought I’d include them in case it’s useful to know. First off, hits are a lot more costly now, as the players you bring in only have 3 games to recoup the loss of the -4 + player transferred out. It’s important to add this to your calculations whenever you’re doing a pro/con on a transfer between now and the end of the season. If possible, avoid hits even more than usual. Second, please keep in mind that the teams fighting to avoid relegation are going to be much tougher to beat. Sounds like an obvious tip, but a lot of the time we glace at the fixtures without really checking who is where in the league and what we should expect. Games like Arsenal vs Brighton or Cardiff vs Crystal Palace in GW37 are now no longer easy to call in favour of the top half team. Brighton showed us against Spurs that they are willing to do whatever they can to stay in the premier league. Cardiff, Brighton and Southampton should all be playing much better than their current table placing suggests, so remember this when thinking about Captain options and potential transfers. Lastly, the exact opposite effect can take place on teams no longer fighting for anything. Keep in mind that teams already ‘on the beach’ might be more inclined to take it a little easier at the end of the season, so bringing in their assets can turn out a little frustrating. It’s always best to target players who still have something to lose!
And that’s a wrap! Good luck out there with your GW36 picks. We’ve not got long left to go now so it’s one final push to cement that OR you’re hoping for, or a few weeks of punts if you’re already miles behind and just going to have a laugh from here on out. As always, thank you so much for reading, and following these posts! There is a tonne of amazing, encouraging managers in this sub and it makes such a huge difference when making content. Without the feedback in my first few posts, I might not have continued, so cheers guys. You’re all awesome!

Team Preview - Bournemouth [Premier League 2019-20 - 7/20]

AFC Bournemouth

by bluecherry94

Welcome to the triumphant return of the Premier League Previews, a series where a fan gives an overview of his team for your perusal, and I get an excuse to take pot-shots at other clubs. This will run until the eve of the Premier League, taking a look at each club in turn. We're continuing our seaside theme today with AFC Bournemouth.

About

Last season

After the first 12 games of last season and sitting pretty in 6th place, rumour has it that certain Cherries fans had started picking which destination they'd prefer for a Europa league 1st qualifying round away day. However after yet more long-term injuries and a resulting loss of form the season fizzled out to a safe 14th place. Don't let the 14th place finish fool you as in my opinion this was the season where the most progression was made since promotion to the Premier League, with the team pulling off some brilliant results (see Bournemouth 4 - 0 Chelsea) and a slight tweaking the style of play, producing scintillating football at times.
The emergence of the deadly "front 4" providing goals and assists galore saw Callum Wilson finally get his deserved international call up and debut goal against the USA, resulting in him being linked to Chelsea for £40m+ in January. Ryan Fraser narrowly missed out on being the top assister in the Premier League to a certain £130m Galactico and has in result been linked with the likes of Everton and Arsenal for £30m (with a year left on his deal). David Brooks has emerged from young boy into a £50m player linked with Manchester United and Josh King continues to be one of the most criminally underrated strikers in the Premier League. With these 4 signed at a combined £13.4m, I'd say the efforts of Eddie's long term planning are coming to fruition.
As has been the issue with every campaign since promotion however, the defence has been the issue. 70 goals were conceded last year, a figure beaten only by Fulham and Huddersfield, who will be playing for Championship glory next season. However a return of 56 goals scored, the most outside the top 6 make up for this. Don't ever say you don't get value for money at Dean Court.
The final couple of games gave reason for optimism however. A brilliant debut against Spurs for young Irish keeper Mark Travers came as a pleasant surprise, as well as promising performances from young fringe players such as January signings Chris Mepham and Dominic Solanke as well as academy product Jack Simpson.
Overall, another entertaining season of good football was left with the bitter-sweet taste of what could have been after that early season form. Injuries to Lewis Cook and record signing Jefferson Lerma were absolutely key, and came at the same time as the drop in form, which is no coincidence. It is hard to complain as a Bournemouth fan, but you get the feeling that fans are starting to get frustrated at a stale-ness within the club. No progress has been made on a new stadium and the cups still seem to be an opportunity to give fringe players some minutes. The new training ground is however under way, so the pavilion outside the ground can stop being used for training soon enough and hopefully can be used as a tool to attract better players to the South Coast. As if the beach and the prospect of a house on Sandbanks was enough!

This Season

After spending £31m (Transfermarkt) on Chris Mepham and Dominic Solanke in January of last season, I wasn't expecting too much from the business this summer. Eddie had been chasing Mepham for what seemed like an eternity, so I'm excited to see what he'll bring to the table this season and Dominic Solanke seems to be hugely rated in the England setup, however he has a job displacing King or Wilson up top.
So far only 2 signings have come in, and they can now be described as very 'Bournemouth' signings. We seem to have found a niche in attracting some of the best young British talent in the Football League and offering them a chance at breaking into a team in the Premier League. Lloyd Kelly comes in for £13m as a highly rated left back who, again is highly rated in the England setup and performed well at Championship level last season for Bristol City. We've also signed right-back Jack Stacey from Luton Town who, I confess I don't know much about but he seems like a full back who loves to get forward and scored a few goals last season as well.
We're rumoured to be looking for a Goalkeeper, Centre Midfielder and a StrikeWinger in the rest of the window. We've been strongly linked with Jack Butland, who could go down as one of the best signings in our history if completed as he was very close to Jordan Pickford in competing for England's #1 spot, but his stock has dropped after playing for an underperforming Stoke in the Championship. That superb shot-stopper is still in there however and could be a massive signing. We also seem to be heavily linked with Philip Billing from Huddersfield. From afar I've heard stories about him having a bad attitude when not picked which you never like to hear, but Eddie could go after Anna from Love Island for all I care, I'd still back him to make the right decision on signing a player.
In terms of exits, we've managed to start being able to get good fees for our players. £20m rising to £26m for Tyrone Mings is a great deal for all parties. It's such a shame it hasn't worked out for Tyrone and I truly wish him all the best at Villa. Whoever managed to convince Sheffield United to not only target Lys Mousset, but fork out £10m for him deserves a heavy commission as a result of that sale. You can see he's got ability, but he's too friendly with Jordon Ibe and I don't think that's helped his attitude. It was a sad moment to see Marc Pugh finally leave, however it's absolutely the right time. As of the time of writing this, Harry Arter is still with us and I would love to see him charging around our midfield again.
To use the old cliche however, the best business this summer has been to retain the aforementioned front 4. Wee man (Ryan Fraser) still hasn't signed a new deal as of yet. With 1 year remaining I'd be gutted to see him go on a free, but I heard someone saw he liked a tweet begging him to sign a deal. Looking forward to the official announcement in the coming days.
I'd love to see us have a go in the cups, I've always said it would be a dream to see Bournemouth at Wembley and I feel we're established enough as a Premier League side to be able to afford the risk of a deep cup run. However as always, the priority has to be staying in the league.

Lys Mousset Transfer Bournemouth Sheffield United £10m
Tyrone Mings Transfer Bournemouth Aston Villa £20m
All fees from Transfermarkt

3 players to watch out for
David Brooks
It's hard to put Brooksy in as a player to watch out for after a break-out season last year, but boy does he have talent. Dejavu occured when he got injured during the 4-0 battering of Chelsea which ruled him out for a while. I can see him progressing further this year and providing more game deciding contributions, could be one to watch out for in the Fantasy League too as he's got bags of goals and assists in him.
Lewis Cook
Had injuries not been a concept, Lewis would be a sure starter in England's midfield. Yet again his season was ended early with a ligament injury and he's only just come back into training. However given an extended run of games he can build a formidable partnership in midfield with yellow card machine Jefferson Lerma to put him right back in contention for another England call up.
Chris Mepham
As mentioned above, Eddie had chased Mepham for 18 months prior to him actually signing in January last year for £12m. Another one of those 'Bournemouth' signings who can come from the Football League and make an impact at Premier League club. Steve Cook and Nathan Ake have become the standout centre-back partnership for us over the last 2 years, however if last season's 70 goal concession is on it's way to being repeated, something will have to change and from the few performances (bar his debut away at Arsenal) he put in last season I can see him progressing to be a real leader in the team. I've seen him touted as a future Wales captain and I'd love to see him also develop the leadership qualities to be a key part of our team to come.
What the fans think
Thanks to /AFCBournemouth for their help.
How do you think this season will go?
We should be capable of making the top half of the table. I wouldn't be surprised if we fall somewhat short of this ambition at the start of 2020 when we have a number of easier fixtures. With another possible league cup quarter final in the mix this would be very much on the cards in my mind. I'd hope for 52-54 points if we're playing as good as we can but 46-48 would be expected.
It's going to very much depend on us getting over our injury problems, because they seem to rear their ugly head every season, but I am quietly optimistic of challenging our high points total of 16-17. If we get the luck we can maybe do a Wolves. We have a nicely settled team and I think that will work in our favour over buying lots. I wouldn't mind two or three new ins to replace outgoings though.
We’ll finish on our highest points tally to date, but not highest table position. We’ll be plagued by injuries a couple of these will be out for long periods (Wilson, Fraser, Brooks, Lewis cook) that will result in some non-starters having to step up.
Which player is going to be your star of the season and why?
David Brooks or Lewis Cook would be the best bets. Brooks is extremely technically gifted and I fully expect him to be one of our highest contributers in combined goals and assists next season. With the Euros coming next summer he should be attracting all sorts of admirers so this might be his last season with us. Cook on the other hand is essential to how Eddie Howe wants us to play. His passing ability is unmatched in our squad and he sets the tempo of how we play. He's back from a lengthy injury so I'm hoping his presence could revitalise the squads performances. Might not contribute in goals and assists but will certainly play a decisive part in whether or not we have a successful season.
It could be any one of four or five. At Bournemouth we don't really seem to do star players, but put it down to a team effort. Saying that, Ryan Fraser is going to be a key player, simply down to the fact that we still don't know for sure that he is staying. If Fraser stays then his partnership with Callum Wilson is again going to be pivotal.
I'm excited to see how our midfield shapes up this season too. Lewis Cook has the ability to really cement himself as a future England staple, and I really believe Jefferson Lerma can show how good he really is in his second season in England. Lerma is the tough man in midfield we have cried out for for years (ever since Marvin Bartley in L1 really - different standard, of course) and I can't wait to see Jeff terrorise his opponents again come August. At the back I expect Nathan Ake will be as dominant both positionally and in the air again. That man just has a sixth sense on where to be and when. On the right I hope that young David Brooks can continue to show the ability he served up in his first Premiership season last year.
Lewis Cook back from injury is ready to show us the quality that we know he has and start to fulfill his potential
How do you think the team will line up?
Boruc, Kelly, Ake, S Cook, Smith, Lerma, L Cook, Fraser, Brooks, King, Wilson. Formation: same 4-5-1 horseshoe when off the ball and using King and Wilson's speed to counter while relying upon Brooks, Fraser and Cook to make the right decisions to keep up the counters momentum, 4-2-2-2 on the ball with Fraser and Brooks working the space on the wing while Cook controls the tempo until we facilitate an opening with Wilson and King plugging the space in front of the opposition back four.
Line up
Agree with matey above: Boruc Smith Cook Ake Kelly Brooks Cook Lerma Fraser King Wilson

Wrap Up

by NickTM

The Manager: Eddie Howe has been highly rated since before he even stepped foot in the Premier League, and since then his reputation has only grown. With a glowing track record of developing talent and what is clearly quite an effective recruitment team behind him, that Howe is entering his seventh full season as manager is something of an achievement for Bournemouth themselves, given the bigger clubs that were circling every time they dumped one of their managers. His commitment to decent football has won Bournemouth a fair amount of admirers in the media, and for good reason.
The Team: Pace is all over this team, from the quick off the mark Nathan Aké at the back to Jefferson Lerma's charging around in midfield to the absolute array of quick forwards. Jordon Ibe, Dom Solanke, Callum Wilson, Junior Stanislas, Ryan Fraser and especially Josh King all have pace to burn, and the threat of it alone is enough to keep teams off-balance. It was nice to see Callum Wilson return with a good haul of goals last year after some particularly nasty injury travails, and Bournemouth fans will be hoping Lewis Cook pulls off something similar. It's also a very English team, which will probably keep them afloat when the Faragian blackshirts march on Westminster next year and burn anyone with a particularly foreign sounding name at the stake.
Why to like them: Artur Boruc is always worth keeping an eye on in case he does something utterly insane. The aforementioned pace means some quite gorgeous raking through ball counterattacks can occasionally be seen, and when in more thorough possession of the ball Bournemouth's attractive style of play is pleasing on the eye.
Why to dislike them: Despite their reputation for positive football, a constantly overlooked feature of Bournemouth teams over the last few years has been their cynical fouling and approach to play that gets constantly glossed over by pundits in favour of talking about how plucky and small they are. Personally I've always had a small, nagging vendetta against them ever since a Bournemouth fan a few years ago adamantly insisted Junior Stanislas was better than Wilf Zaha.
Summary: Another season in the Prem for the smallest team in the league, and it's another season where they'll be hoping to stay up with authority. Enough time has passed now that lots of people are expecting them to push on a little this year, and if injuries don't rear their ugly head they could well be on their way to the top half.

Match Updates
-47' What an afternoon it has been. Manchester United have already been held to a draw by Bournemouth, which means they can only move out of the 6th place position if Arsenal wins here by 7 goals. Tyrone Mings and Zlatan Ibrahimovic both face retrospective action for a stamp and elbow respectively, Ibrahimovic has missed a penalty, in Swansea's game with Burnley the Clarets have won a penalty for their own player handling the ball. What better way to end the matchday than a Liverpool-Arsenal match?
Sanchez has been benched apparently, it could be because Arsene is trying a system more effective against Klopp's, maybe he's resting him for the CL match against Bayern (which would be a bit redundant) or it could have to do with the rumours flying around lately about Alexis leaving. Who knows.
Klopp has yet again changed the CB partnership, pairing Matip with Klavan instead of Lucas. Can replaces Henderson as the holding mid since the latter is injured.
-36' Today's match will be the 212th time in which the two teams play each other in a competitive match, with Liverpool having the narrow edge with 84 wins compared to Arsenal's 78. Liverpool head into this game having avoided defeat in each of their last three games with Arsenal.
-30' This season, Sanchez started 31 games in the Premier League and Champions League, scoring 20 goals and providing 11 assists. On paper, it seems an odd decision to drop him to the substitutes' bench for a match like this one. You have to wonder what Arsene's angle is here, is he trying to shittify Arsenal so Liverpool won't be able to beat them?
-26' Full time results in other matches: Leicester City 3-1 Hull City, Stoke City 2-0 Middlesbrough, Swansea City 3-2 Burnley, Watford 3-4 Southampton, West Bromwich Albion 0-2 Crystal Palace. No goaless matches so far.
-8' The weather in Liverpool is 8 °C, Mostly cloudy, Feels like 3°C, Wind Speed 18KM/H, Wind direction S, Humidity 88%, Visibility 10KM, Probability of Precipitation 15%. (thanks to our weatherman on the scene u/alitheboss55)
-4' Teams are coming out. COME ON YOU REDM- um, i hope both teams have fun
0' Game on lads!
3' It's been a bright start from the home side who have Can to thank for getting Firmino to the byline. Liverpool earn a corner and it's panic stations inside the penalty area but the Gunners eventually clear.
4' Bellerin crosses to Giroud, Matip clears. Corner for Ossenou.
6' First 5 minutes are over, Liverpool have had majority of the ball but no chances for either team really.
8' Interesting from Arsenal early on, 451 out of possession - compact defensive block & happy for Liverpool to have the ball in wide areas
9' GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL ROBERTO FIRMINOOOOOOO, THE REDS GO 1 UP AFTER A GORGEOUS BALL FROM SADIO MANE CONVERTED BY THE MAN WITH THE WHITEST TEETH IN ENGLAND
12' Liverpool love to play wide open. Arsenal playing into their hands. This is turning into a tactical battle, rather than a back-and-forth encounter which many would have expected.
14' Alexis's smirk on the bench after Liverpool go 1 up. Make of that what you will, i think he's coming here lads. Corner for Liverpool taken by Coutinho.
18' Liverpool playing very sexy football. Burnley rubbing their hands at the prospect of their first away win this season next week.
20' What Arsenal are missing is Sanchez's work-rate when Liverpool have the ball. Giroud has his strengths but he isn't chasing down the Liverpool backline. They are spraying the ball about on the halfway line under very little pressure.
22' Most crossed assists in Europe's big five leagues this season:
22 Real Madrid
18 Monaco
15 Liverpool
24' Giroud has been struggling with a knock for the last few minutes but Sanchez isn't among the substitutes warming up. You have to feel that something must have gone on behind the scenes. It's all very strange innit
26' Everyone knows Liverpool's weakness is at the back. Why on earth would you bench your best goal scorer, who is both tricky and quick? here he is avin a laff about it
29' Shot! Better from Liverpool. The referee plays a fantastic advantage and the ball ends up at the feet of Coutinho around 20 yards out. Great save from Cech-
33' Dive from Coutinho. Should have been booked perhaps. Great play outside that from Liverpool though.
Coquelin yellow carded after pulling Lallana's pyjamas
37' We still aren't seeing anything of Arsenal as an attacking force. Their one shot came from a Xhaka volley which went high into the stand. You'd have to expect changes at the break. Liverpool are still going about their business in the same manner.
40' GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL SADIO MANEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE A GOAL SO CLASS I WILL CALL IT OZIL, MILNER TO FIRMINO WHO SPRAYS IT TO MANE WHO GETS IT INTO THE BOTTOM CORNER FROM 12 YARDS.
44' CHANCE! What a chance for Liverpool to score a third! They get a bit of luck as a ball over the top is deflected into the path of Coutinho, but the Brazilian brings down the ball before clipping it straight at Cech from 12 yards. It should be 3-0. Should be even more. Liverpool should start taking their chances - this match is far from over.
2 minutes of added time.
HALF TIME: Liverpool 2-0 Arsenal
Liverpool are the biggest conundrum in world football. How do they look world class one week, then pub class the next? Unless Arsene changes something up this could turn into a unflattering scoreline for the Arsenal. Either way, should be a fun 2nd half.
If Liverpool win here Klopp will become the first Liverpool manager since Gerard Houllier in 1999/2000 to do a Premier League home/away double over Arsene Wenger in a single season.
46' Liverpool get us back underway. As expected, Sanchez is on, with Coquelin the man to be withdrawn.
48' Great header from Giroud tipped onto the crossbar by Mignolet before he claims the ball at the second attempt!
51' Arsenal have been much more adventurous at the start of this second half. They are yet to create another chance but Sanchez is having an immediate impact.
54' Coutinho produces several pieces of skill on the edge of the penalty area before earning a free kick. That was sublime. He steps up to take the set piece but the ball goes straight into the wall.
57' GOAAL! Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal (Welbeck) It's game on at Anfield! Welbeck gets the goal after lifting the ball over an advancing Mignolet from 12 yards but it is all about the pass from Sanchez, who picked out the run of his teammate.
61' We are an hour into this game and it has a completely different complexion to the one at half time. Liverpool look scared every time that Sanchez gets the ball and his presence is stopping Clyne from getting forward. There's definitely another goal in this.
65' Shot from Clyne who appears in an attacking position! What are the chances? Mane sends the ball through to the right-back but rather than cross into the middle, he shoots towards the near post and his effort goes over the crossbar.
67' Booking for Can who commits the most blatant foul you will ever see to stop Sanchez in his tracks. The referee played advantage but with Sanchez out of the way, the move petered out.
70' We are into the final 20 minutes and both teams are still pushing forward. Sanchez has been successful in keeping Clyne in defensive areas but Liverpool still aren't taking a backwards step. It could be the time to take a more conservative approach but with our back four that would probably just backfire.
73' Wenger makes his final two changes as Theo Walcott and Lucas Perez replaced Welbeck and Giroud. Just before their arrival, Coutinho fired over from 20 yards. He would have expected to hit the target.
74' That should be the game for Liverpool. Coutinho swings in the perfect set piece for Matip at the back post but he mis-times his header and Cech makes an easy save. So far this half has been end-to-end and looks like a proper Arsenal-Liverpool fixture. When was the last time there was a boring match between the two?
80' Coutinho is the first man to be withdrawn by Klopp with Dicock Origi coming on in his place.
83' DIVOCK HITS THE POST reds very close to a third goal.
87' It's still all Liverpool to a large extent. Arsenal look threatening on the odd flurry forward but the home side are still looking for that third goal. Just three minutes to go plus added-on time.
89' Bellerin looks stunning with this haircut. Reminds me a bit of Pires.
90' There will be three minutes of added-on time. It's a big three minutes in the season for both sides.
90+1' GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL GINI WIJNALDUM THE FLYING DUTCHMAN 3-1 FOR LIVERPOOL AND THE 3 POINTS ARE IN THE BAG.
90+3' Game over. Liverpool are 3rd with 52 points but City, Utd and Arsenal have games in hand. See ya lads, i hope i was able to cover this nicely.

/r/Championship's Championship club by club season preview - part 1!

Part 2 here - Part 3 here - Part 4 here

On Friday at 8pm UK time, Reading and Derby County will kick off the 127th season of the English second division - also known as the Championship! 24 clubs will compete for 3 promotion spots to the Premier league (2 via automatic promotion and 1 via playoffs) and to avoid the 3 relegation spots to the third tier a.k.a League One.

Its looking like a really tight and competitive season. The league is absolutely full of ambitious player and managerial talent - the more time goes by the more it looks like a Premier League 2. If you want a competitive league with proper English football, that also has the spice of skilful players and forward thinking managers, it really is the place to go.

This is guide written by the fans who have come together on /Championship - an absolutely huge thanks to them. Do check out the sub, we try to keep it a good place to discuss the EFL, away from the rancid gloryhunting shithole that is /soccer (just kidding - I like this place). Lots going on, including a score predictor thread which is running all season.

This guide is in table order with the PL demoted sides first. Only 5 clubs today (because the Swansea one is a fucking novel and I can't fit any more in), the rest will be submitted tomorrow and Friday. Do bare in mind that not all the transfer news will be up to date as these guides were largely written a week ago. Point out to me if there are any clear errors with formatting or spelling.

How to watch in the UK: Live rights are owned by Sky Sports. They are upping the number of televised matches this season. Reading v Derby on Friday is televised. The weekly highlights show previously on Channel 5 is moving to Quest TV, which apparently is on Freeview.
How to watch abroad: Depends, but in most territories, the iFollow Service is available, which is £110 to watch all a single club's matches. Bargain. I think the clubs that aren't on iFollow have their own similar streaming services.
Check out club Youtube channels - quite a few of them post extended highlights now with their own commentary, including Derby, Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday, Brentford and more. (You may need VPN to watch if you're abroad.)

Major honours: Football League Cup (2013), Championship Play-off Winner (2011), League One Winners (1925, 1949, 2008)
17/18 finishing postion: 18th (Premier League)
Transfermarkt squad value: €115.5 mil NOTE: This number is as of July 22nd, when we still have Mawson (€15 mil), A. Ayew (€15 mil), Bony (€10 mil), Clucas (€8 mil) and Fernandez (€8 mil), who are all pretty much expected to be sold, or loaned out, before the season starts. Without all of these players except Bony (who's injured for a while so it makes it unlikely he'll be sold soon), the squad value would be around €70 mil.
Manager: Graham Potter joined the Swans on 11th June 2018. In 2010, he became head coach of Östersund, who were in the fourth tier of Swedish football. 5 years later, he got the club promoted into the Swedish top flight and in 2017, they won Svenska Cupen which qualified them for the Europa League where they managed to get through the group stage. He’s been applauded for what he did at Östersund and the way he managed to build the club up from nothing. The year after his success in the Europa league he signed a 3 year contract with Swansea.
Potter is well respected by The Swans and after a few years of poor managerial and financial decisions his appointment is seen as a step in the right direction to bringing us back to our old ways of being a well-run club. Potter has been recognised for his "progressive" and "unconventional" coaching methods. At Östersund, he encouraged his players and staff to engage in community activities, such as performing in theatre and music productions which was designed to take them out of their comfort zone. Potter describes his style of football on the pitch as "tactically flexible, attacking, and possession-based". At Östersund, he deployed a flexible 3–5–2 formation centred on ball possession.
Best player(s)/ talisman:With many of our best players being rumoured with a move away what good players that remain at the start of the season is yet to be seen.
Alfie Mawson is probably our standout player. He’s been amazing for us since we got him and was a bargain at about £3m. He’s great in the air and is just an all round tank. Keeping him will be a huge boost for us and should be solid in the championship.
Federico "El Pajaro" Fernandez has also been strong at the back with Alfie. The pair played with each other for the majority of last season and together became a solid unit. We will most likely sell him to reduce wages though.
Jordan Ayew put in a great shift last season and was our top goal scorer. His work rate was immense and was able to drop back and defend when needed. He’s fast, able to beat a man and a decent finisher. Sadly all these players are transfer targets for other clubs and might not even be here at the start of the season. If we can keep a lot of our players we should have a decent season but who knows who'll be left by the end of the window…
Rising star: Swansea’s U23 had a great season last year and with Potter wanting a young and fresh squad, a handful have moved up into the first team.
Our standout youngster, Oliver McBurnie, joined Barnsley on loan in January last season where he went on to win a Championship player of the month award after 6 goals in 8 games and went on to win Barnsley’s Player of the year award. While only 22, he’s struggled to break into our first team but will most likely be our main striker for the coming season. Be on the lookout for his long legs, miniature shinpads and ridiculous sock length! LEGS LEGS LEGS!!!
Connor Roberts performed well at RB last season and adapted quickly to the premier league where he battled Kyle Naughton to be in the starting line up and did great when given the chance. Decent at going forward and professional at the back. Hopefully potter puts him ahead of Naughton.
What happened last season?: What Happened last season?: After our great escape the season before and with Paul Clement at the helm there was optimism that the 17/18 season could be our turning point where we start rebuilding 'The Swansea Way". How wrong we were.
After a disastrous transfer window where we sold Sigurdsson and never replaced him and started panic buying the week before the transfer window closed we were left an obvious hole in our team. We had no creativity in midfield and no one could kick the ball into the box to save their life. And just to rub it in further Renato Sanches turned out to be more disappointing than Bob Bradley. With the team sitting bottom of the table Clement was sacked in late December.
Then along came the wise talking Carlos Carvalhal who managed to rebuild the confidence the team had lost. Our results took a turn for the good, beating Liverpool, Arsenal, Burnley and West Ham consecutively at home. He pulled us out of the relegation zone and things were looking good. However, the good times were quickly followed by the bad times. Our form turned and we didn’t win a single one of our last 9 matches. We were quickly relegated after pitifully losing to both Southampton and Stoke in our last 2 games of the season.
Highlights (Or lowlights):
The pass by Renato Sanches that summed up his and our season
Swansea City 3-1 Arsenal
Summer transfer business (so far): At the end of last season, it was clear we needed several transfers, both in and out. However, this would all depend on the manager we got.
Yan Dhanda (Free, Liverpool): A 19 year-old Midfielder, Yan Dhanda left Liverpool this summer and joined the Swans in a free, before we even hired Graham Potter. At one time one of the most promosing youngsters in Liverpool's Academy, injuries slowed down his progress, and ultimately made him fall behind other players. Citing lack of first-team playing time, Dhanda decided to join us this summer in hopes of getting regular playing time in the senior squad. Through 3 pre-season games, Dhanda has been one of the brighest and most impressive players in the squad, even scoring a game-winning goal and smashing a penalty in a shootout against Genoa. With our current injuries and shenanigans involved in our midfield, Dhanda has a good chance of becoming a starter and hopefully guide our midfield during the season.
Jordi Govea (Free, Real Madrid): Another 19 year-old from Ecuador, Jordi was the first signing under Potter. Not much can be said about the lad, but this is what Real Madrid had as his bio:
Jordi is an Ecuadorian defender who possess three key qualities for a player in his position: he's skilful, is able to go past a player and has a good shot on him. He's left footed and is able to send in good crosses on the run.
With Martin Olsson currently as our starting LB, and Kyle Naughton as the backup, the hope is that Jordi can develop on our U-23 squad and hopefully move up to the senior squad in coming years. Also the only man I've seen do a medical while wearing jeans (https://twitter.com/SwansOfficial/status/1015251916132057089)
Joel Asoro (€2 mil., Sunderland): Yet another 19 year-old, a Swedish winger who has represented his country in the younger levels, he was Potter's first senior signing. With world-class speed, and some impressive skills, Asoro was able to score 3 goals and get 2 assists last season in 26 apperances for Sunderland. While these numbers may seem a bit disappointing, many of these games were sub appearances on a very dysfunctional team. Along with Dhanda, Asoro has been one of the most impressive players during preseason, constantly beating his man with either speed or skills, and whipping in good balls to Legs. At the current rate, Asoro appears to have a good chance of starting on the right wing spot, with Nathan Dyer and Luciano Narsingh backing him up.
Predicted starting XI: NOTE: This is gonna be assuming Mawson, A. Ayew, Clucas, and Fernandez are all sold by the start of the season. If by some reason they end up staying, they are pretty much guaranteed to start. Based on the pre-season games so far, a lineup looking like this would be plausible, with Rodon most likely to be replaced by a CB (possibly Scott McKenna) when we buy one. Our second unit is looking something like this.
Best case scenario: Graham Potter is able to motivate and make sure our senior players (Fer, Carroll, etc.) stay fit, along with our youngsters being able to make an impact as expected, and also we retain Mawson, Fernandez, and Clucas, we can finish in the top 2 and get promoted automatically.
Worst case scenario: Our worst case scenario, and something many of us fear of happening, consists of primarily 3 things. 1. Graham Potter isn't given enough time to build an identity with our squad and is sacked by the midway point of the season by the greedy, dumb American owners. . 2. We end up not replacing the players we sold properly like last summer, therefore having a squad with holes everywhere and no chemistry. 3. Our youngsters such as Asoro, McBurnie, Dhanda and company don't pan out and progress at all, thefore becoming mediocre players. This would all culminate in us looking like Sunderland, and making relegation a probability.
Prediction: Realistically I see us selling Mawson and company in the last days before the season starts and not replacing them properly until later on. Because of this, as well as our current injuries with Fer and Clucas, I can see us initially struggling to build an identity but over time, we will start playing like Potter wants us and finishing the season strongly.
8th place, missing the play-offs by 4 points
What will happen to your closest rivals?: The scum that is known as Cardiff City will break the record for lowest points ever accumulated in a Premier League season, getting 5 points all from draws, and will therefore get relegated with 17 games to spare.

West Bromwich Albion by Joelwba

Location: The Hawthorns, West Bromwich, West Midlands
Nickname: The Baggies, The Throstles
Major honours: 1x League title, 1x League Cup, 5x FA Cup
17/18 finishing postion: 20th in Premier League (relegated)
Transfermarkt squad value: £101.16m
Manager: Darren Moore or Big Dave as he's known to Albion fans. A club icon as a player in the early 2000s, he returned to look after our U23 squad before being promoted to assistant manager by Alan Pardew in January. Following the end of Pardew's horrific reign, Moore took temporary charge with Albion facing inevitable relegation. He led us to wins over Newcastle, Spurs, Man Utd and a draw with Liverpool, somehow taking our futile battle for survival to the final week of the season. Following this he earned the head coach role permanently. Moore is loved among the Albion faithful, largely due to his reputation as a player here. He heavily favours a 4-4-2 formation and at the back end of last season, tended to soak up pressure and play on the counter attack. It will be interesting to see how his approach differs in a league where we are one of the favourites, not fighting to survive (hopefully)
Best player(s)/ talisman: It's an interesting situation for Albion currently. There are plenty of Premier League quality players still in the squad. A lot depends on if they are picked off before the deadline shuts. Chris Brunt is a club stalwart and likely to be reappointed as captain. He is adored by the fans and in my opinion will be an incredible asset in the championship. His set pieces alone will bring 10+ goals to the side. Kieran Gibbs is a high quality player who appears to be set to stay and should make a big difference. Jay Rodriguez, Craig Dawson, Salomon Rondon and Nacer Chadli should all make a big difference in this division IF they stay. In all honesty I expect to lose a few of the above. Sam Johnstone appears to be an astute signing to replace the outgoing Ben Foster.
Rising star: Sam Field he's one of our own! He looked completely at home against some of the top Premier League sides last campaign. A box-to-box midfielder, he's full of energy and looks so comfortable on the ball. I expect him to be a major part of our side this season, having just signed a new long-term deal.
Kyle Edwards is an exciting attacking midfielder who has been impressing in pre-season. He may have a part to play following a loan spell at Exeter last campaign.
Jonathon Leko looked like a potential world-beater when he first came through a couple of years back. A lightning quick winger full of tricks. A loan spell at Bristol City and limited appearances later he seems to be losing his way. Will be an interesting one to watch.
Finally, the enigma that is Olly Burke. After signing with us last summer for £15m, he failed to impress any of the four managers we had over the season. He looks exciting when he comes on, without any end product so far, and was unfairly blamed for a loss at West Ham by Alan 'Coward' Pardew. We all know the talent he's got. Hopefully we can see it this season.
What happened last season?: Let's not talk about it... We finally escaped the stranglehold of Tony Pulis, only to opt for the human joke that is Alan Pardew and duly hurtled towards relegation. Four of our players stole a taxi and then played (and lost) the following weekend.
Pardew was sacked about 3 months too late, and Moore took over, restoring pride with some notable wins over Man Utd and Spurs.
This season we also lost the great Cyrille Regis, and the outpouring of emotion and the coming together of the club during the weeks after his passing was something special.
Summer transfer business (so far): We started by releasing Claudio Yacob, Boaz Myhill and Gareth McAuley. Yacob and McAuley will be greatly missed but it is perhaps the right time for them to go.
Jonny Evans departed for Leicester for a cut-price £3m, Ben Foster left for Watford and James McClean has departed for Stoke City.
Sam Johnstone has been bought in to replace Foster, with Jonathon Bond arriving as backup. Kyle Bartley has joined from Swansea City and it appears that Harvey Barnes will soon be arriving on loan from Leicester.
Finally, James Morrison is currently out of contract but still with the club. His future is uncertain.
I am very happy with Johnstone and Bartley. It has been a quiet window for Albion so far but that is largely a good thing. The squad is packed with Premier League talent and the window is more about keeping hold of them.
There is major interest in Dawson and Rondon, along with interest in Rodriguez, Hegazi and Chadli. If any of the above go, then we would need to replace. Otherwise I would be happy with another striker and another CB.
It is also worth mentioning that every player in the Albion side suffered a 50% wage cut upon relegation which means that we are financially sound despite relegation, but may lead to more big names leaving.
Predicted starting XI: This is my best attempt. It will undoubtedly be 4-4-2. We may see Nyom in at right back and perhaps Barry in for Field.
Obviously about half of this side could leave, so we shall see.
Best case scenario: The bulk of the side remains and the quality in the side shines through as we breeze to automatic promotion.
Worst case scenario: The better players leave or do not put the effort in. Moore cannot transfer his great start into his first full season in management. We become embroiled in a relegation battle
Prediction: It will be somewhere in the middle. I'd like to think we'll go up automatically but I think play-offs are more likely. 6th
What will happen to your closest rivals?: Villa won't go down but will settle into mid-table, despite the recent takeover.
I think Wolves will do well in the PL, although I don't know how long Nuno will last before a big club comes in.

Stoke City by mrmariomaster

Location: Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire
Nickname: The Potters
Stadium: bet365 Stadium, 30,089 seats
Major honours: 1972 League Cup
17/18 finishing position: 19th, Premier League
Squad value: £127.8 million
Manager: Gary Rowett signed from Derby in May. His honest attitude has brought lots of optimism to fans, who are looking forward to an overhaul of the Club. His style of play seems to change based on the squad he has available.
Best Player: Joe Allen was vital to the Club last season, giving us hope that we would avoid relegation. His massive new contract signed this summer shows how loyal and committed to the Club he is, and will be a vital player this season.
Rising star: Tom Edwards is a local lad who has won the Under 18 Player of the Year award twice in the Club. In the latter parts of last season he played some good first team football.
What happened last season: A pathetic attempt at a season that had been coming for a while under Mark Hughes. Paul Lambert was appointed in January, but a win rate of just 2 in 15 matches wasn’t enough for him to keep his job and miss out on the million pound bonus offered to him.
Transfer business so far: So far this has been a decent transfer window. Peter Etebo had an amazing World Cup for Nigeria and Benik Afobe looks really promising. Adam Federici has also been appointed to replace Lee Grant. Xherdan Shaqiri has left along with a few players like Stephen Ireland and Glen Johnson who will not be missed. Badou Ndiaye also looks to be on his way out, but it looks like Jack Butland will stay with us, which is massive. Perhaps most surprising are the new contracts signed by our 2 best players last season, Joe Allen and Moritz Bauer.
Predicted Line up: Here is our predicted squad. I’m not sure what formation we will have. EDIT: This is a new version, complete with our rumoured new signings and in the right formation.
Best case scenario: Stoke will finish top with an all-time Championship points record.
Worst case scenario: A mediocre start to the season will see Rowett sacked and Stoke with a disappointing mid-table finish.
Prediction: I think with our squad and our new manager, we will finish 1st.
What will happen to our closest rivals? Port Vale will be relegated to the Vanarama National League.

Aston Villa by trueschoolalumni

Major honours: 7 First Division wins, 7 FA Cups, 5 League Cups, 1 European Cup, 1 European Super Cup, 1 Intertoto Cup
17/18 finishing postion: 4th
Transfermarkt squad value: £67.77m and dropping fast
Manager: Steve Bruce (for now). Former Man Utd playing legend who's been a fixture of English football for decades. He joined Villa in 2016 after successful runs at Hull, Sunderland (yes they were good once) and Birmingham City. A bit of a promotion specialist, he's taken Championship clubs up to the Premier League 4 times in the past and just missed out last season, losing 1-0 to Fulham in the Playoff Final. Tactically, he's fairly old school who prefers 4-4-2 or a 4-1-4-1, usually involving a big man up top. Fun fact: while managing Huddersfield in 1999 he wrote three novels, "Striker!", "Sweeper!" and "Defender!", which focus on main character Steve Barnes, a football manager. Barnes solves crime and takes on terrorists, and the books have become prized rarities. The Guardian's Football Weekly podcast managed to get a copy and read out some of the copy - suitably awful.
Best player(s)/ talisman: There's only one Jack Grealish. A Villa boy through and through, he's been with the club since 2001 (aged 6), and made his way into the first team in the 2013-14 season. He's been the centre of controversy a few times, most notably getting on the beers and passing out on a Tenerife street. Playing as a number 10, his quick feet and dribbling skills provide a number of goals and assists, as well as fouls. He probably went down a bit too easily when first in the Premier League, but time in the gym has noticeably toughened him up and he's a much more solid player as a result. One of the better players in the Championship, and due to Villa's abject finances, a transfer target for the likes of Leicester.
Rising star: Keinan Davis could possibly be it, potentially Andre Green and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy as well.
What happened last season?: Have you ever walked into a casino, spotted the roulette table and popped £10,000 on red? It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off. You've doubled your money if you win, but look like a right git if you lose. Villa figured this was a good way to approach 2017-18: spend millions on players, get in lots of loans, gamble everything on achieving promotion. After a so-so start, Bruce got the team playing well, stringing together a number of wins and moving through the playoff spots. Unfortunately they ran into a few teams playing out of their skin - champions Wolves ran away with the league and boasted a squad that included several Champions League players. Neil Warnock's Cardiff couldn't stop winning and grabbed the second automatic promotion. In the playoff final Villa came up against a Ryan Sessegnon-led Fulham and were just pipped at the post 1-0.
Summer transfer business (so far): It's one-way traffic, due to absolutely abysmal finances. Loan spells for Lewis Grabban, Robert Snodgrass, Josh Onomah and Sam Johnstone have all ended, which is almost the spine of the team (Johnstone in particular - he was arguably the best keeper in the Championship and personally bagged a number of wins). Plus clubs are circling to pick off whatever assets we have left (eg. Jack Grealish, James Chester). With no prospect of anyone new coming in, it looks like the youth academy will be getting a lot more game time.
Predicted starting XI: Possibly this, but half these players could be gone before the first match.
Best case scenario: Mid-table anonymity would have to be best case - Villa are a mess and could go down this time around.
Worst case scenario: Our finances are the real issue - they are dire. Villa need to find £9 million this month to avoid going into administration. Owner "Dr." Tony Xia is a billionaire, apparently, but tax bills went unpaid and the question remains if he's able to support the club as generously as he has in the past. Administration, points deductions and potentially relegation to League One are all real possibilities right now. It's not looking good.
Prediction: Due to financial irregularities in the 23 clubs above us, Villa will get into the Champions League and take out the likes of Atletico, Bayern and Real Madrid on the way to our second European Cup. "Taylor, Green, prepared to venture down the left. There's a good ball played in for Jack Grealish. Oh, it must be and it is! It's Keinan Davis!"
What will happen to your closest rivals?: Unfortunately the Scum managed to avoid League One in the final rounds of the season. Here's hoping they go one better. Agbonlahor to re-sign for one game: the Derby. And score the winner, again.

Middlesbrough by OneSmallHuman

Location: The Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough
Founded: 1876
Nickname: The Boro (Or just Boro)
Major honours: The League cup 2003-2004 season
17/18 finishing position: 5th
Transfermarkt squad value: 79.34m
Manager: Tony Pulis became manager of us in late December 2017, replacing the sacked Garry Monk after a pretty lacklustre few months of the campaign (despite where our league position was). Pulis is known in England for being the man that is never relegated when in charge of someone in the top flight. We are all aware of Tony Pulis' style of football. You start by having a strong and massive defence and maximise your use of set pieces to gain an advantage. Pulis is a lover of all set piece plays, whether that is crossing the ball in from a corner or free kick, or launching a ball into the box from a throw in, they're all in his arsenal of weapons. 'Pulisball' as it is pretty much known. Pulis has achieved promotion from the championship once before with Stoke, and I hope he achieves it again with us this season
Best player(s)/ rising star: I mean, where else do I begin. Adama Traore. Arguably the best player in the championship on his day and is one of the most frightening dribblers in English football, maybe even world football. The winger is known for his speed and dribbling ability although is usually criticised for his lack of end product. Before last season I would've agreed, however 5 goals and 10 assists, with all but 2 assists coming before Pulis' arrival show the progression of the Spanish winger.
As for other members of the squad, Ben Gibson, the prodigal son. Boro through and through he's progressed into a commanding centre half with the ability to play out from the back thanks to Karanka. He gained attention and emerged as one of the few given credit after our disappointing premier league campaign but was only the subject of one bid upon our relegation, from now manager Tony Pulis. It remains to be seen whether he'll be here come the first game of the season, but I hope he will be.
As for future stars, Dael Fry, already has played 2 championship campaigns for us and looks as assured as a veteran of the game. Another centre half produced by our academy and he is being played in cdm this pre-season by Pulis, to add to his versatility. Hopefully a standout season for him, especially if Gibson does end up leaving. Finally, yes, he does always look as confused as images of him show.
What happened last season?: Well, the first half of the season was tragic under Monk. We played really poor football at times and looked like we hadn't defended a day in our lives. There was also no consistency in the team, we'd win one game then lose the next. A key theme under both managers however, was our inability to beat those around us in the table. After Pulis' appointment the results picked up and it ended with us finishing 5th in the table. We ultimately lost in the playoff semi finals to Aston Villa but honestly, we didn't think we'd even be in the top half around Christmas.
Summer transfer business (so far): Just the three deals to talk about so far. We've acquired Paddy McNair from Sunderland who looks like a decent player. He's been utilised in right back and midfield during pre-season so it looks like they'll be his positions for the season. I imagine he'll play alongside Clayts and Howson in a midfield three.
Aden Flint was signed from Bristol City and I think I'm in the minority when I say I don't like how much we paid for him. Obviously the man is a Pulis player but I'm a bit unsure about his defensive ability. That being said he's looked strong during pre-season and I'm sure Pulis will get the best out of him. Fabio departed our club for Nantes so we'll need more full back cover.
As for the rest of the window, I expect Gibson to leave but will be delighted if he doesn't. One of our strikers will also leave and Braithwaite should follow after his decent World Cup performances. We'll probably bring in a striker and a winger and hopefully hold onto Adama. That'd be a successful window in my eyes.
Predicted starting XI: My best guess The only other guess I could make is that Gibson might leave and then Ayala would start, but he's injured at this point in time. Britt might play over Gestede too if Pulis is feeling fancy.
Best case scenario: It has to be top of the pile right? It's not out of the question to imagine us up there and if everything clicks then we've got a chance. A defence that scores more than some teams' strikers, Adama channelling his inner Messi and finding consistency, Rudy/Britt/Bamford scoring for fun. It could be carnage.
Worst case scenario: I can't see us finishing outside the playoffs, if we did then that would be gut-wrenching. But if we did then that would most certainly be the worst. Realistically, it'd be losing in the playoffs... again, and if it were in the final again then god help me. Although saying this, now losing Bamford and maybe Traore will be a worst case scenario in itself, definitely if they're not replaced.
Prediction: Have to be confident, although it always kills me. 1st or 2nd. Tony Pulis and his nice white trainers carry us to the promise land. That being said, we never do it the easy way.
Best Match of Last Season Sorry Leeds fans, but it had to be. "Hattrick Bamford" as our Twitter account tweeted, 3-0 against Leeds with Adama running the show. Leeds clearly found some positive from the game as they're set to sign him off us. This was the sign of what we should've done more last season. Showed what Paddy could've been too if given an even more extended period in Striker by himself. Oh well.
What will happen to your closest rivals?: Who even are our closest rivals in this league? We're in geographical purgatory. Can't say Sunderland anymore so what? Leeds? Bielsa either turns them into the well oiled machine they hope for or he succumbs to the old Leeds ways and is sacked by December. As for the Mackems, probably promoted from League 1.
