Why you should learn poker and game theory (LONG READ)
Hello everyone! I have only been on Reddit for a few months but I learned so much from it that I figured I should try and give back to the community. English is my second language and this is the first time I ever write a full-length article, I hope you will enjoy reading it and I would be very thankful if you could provide some feedback about my writing, about the topic, or about anything else really… So here goes! Why you should learn poker and game theory: My story is similar to that of many: I learned about the game 10 years ago (during the golden age of online poker) when some friends of mine invited me to play a home game. Although I initially thought of poker as just another game of chance akin to playing slots or roulette in a casino, I quickly came to realize that there is a lot more to it as my more experienced friends would repeatedly get the best of me during these home games, which led me to start watching videos and reading strategy books to improve my skill… Little did I know it’d be the start of a journey that would impact many different aspects of my life way beyond the game itself, as most of the fundamental principles learned through poker can be applied to your decision-making outside of the game, especially when it comes to money management and investing. Now, let’s dive into a few of these principles: - Risk management (i.e. Bankroll management) When learning about how to be successful playing poker, the first big piece of advice most people come across is bankroll management or BRM. To understand BRM, you must first realize that poker has a lot of variance: you might be vastly ahead in a given hand but there is almost always a slim chance that you will lose in the end if one specific card hits. This implies that you will sometimes lose even though you were a 99% favorite, and that you will sometimes get unlucky and lose 2, 5 or maybe even 20 such encounters in a row. THIS is variance. It doesn’t mean that you played bad or that you made bad decisions, but rather that you got unlucky. Over time you will have lucky streaks and unlucky streaks, and these will average out in the long term… It’s just the way the game goes. Now that we understand variance, let’s get back to BRM. What is it exactly? Let’s say you are the best poker player in the world but you only have 1000$ that you can EVER use to play with. Taking your whole 1000$ on one table and multiplying your stack at an exponential rate might seem like a good idea. Surely nothing can go wrong since you’re the best player in the world right? But variance can be a bitch ;) Even if you’re the best you will lose regularly and you will sometimes get unlucky, it’s just part of the game. The correct move here is to apply BRM, which means only using a small % of your available capital for each game you play in order to reduce the risk of going broke. Using only 100$ per game would already be a lot safer, but you still run the risk of going under on a streak of bad luck. If you only allocate 10$ per game you play, then it becomes virtually impossible for you to ever go broke, even on a huge streak of bad luck. Sure it’s not as exciting and you won’t be making money quite as fast as you could, but this is the way to go to make sure you don’t go broke… This approach to risk management translates very well to investing: - Only invest what you can afford to lose. Once the money is on the table it’s as good as gone, which is why you should only use your “spare” cash and never invest with your living expenses or worse, borrow money to invest. - Diversify your investments. There is always a chance, however slim it might be, that you will lose most of your investment. This is why going all-in on a specific investment is generally a bad idea (this applies particularly well in the crypto space). Proper BRM allows you to make sure that you will come out ahead in the long run if you play well, which basically comes down to making more good decisions than bad ones. But that’s assuming you don’t let emotions come in the way of your decision-making, which brings us to our next point… - Emotional management (i.e. Handling tilt/Positive mindset) Nobody likes losing… In the same way we enjoy winning because of the dopamine rush, we feel bad when we lose which is totally natural. Overcoming this and avoiding tilt (irrational decisions made out of angefrustration) is an essential skill for any successful poker player. You might play a sound game of poker and apply good BRM, but you will still lose if you let your emotions get the best of you. After a loss, rather than being angry and frustrated, you should evaluate your decision-making. If your decision-making was good, you just got unlucky and you shouldn’t worry about it since you are playing for the long run (remember that variance teaches us that anything can happen in the short-term). If your decision-making was bad, you need to learn from your mistakes and move on. The key here is to always have a positive mindset: making mistakes is part of the learning process and should be seen as an occasion to improve. Being angry and ranting, on the other hand, rarely result in anything positive. Again, this translates very well to investing: - Don’t be impulsive, don’t let your emotions cloud your judgment. You should not FOMO because the price is pumping, nor should you sell because of FUD or price corrections. If you believe in a project, short-term price changes (did I hear someone say “variance”?) shouldn’t bother you. - Don’t get stuck up on losses. You bought the top and it crashed immediately after? You sold the bottom right before a huge rally? Don’t let this bother you: what’s done is done and you just need to move on and make the best of your current situation. - Have a positive mindset. Anger and frustration lead to nothing. Yes you could have bought in 2009 when you first heard about it, hindsight is always 20/20. Stay positive and keep learning/improving yourself. The good thing about all this is that it goes way beyond poker or investing. Being aware of your emotions and how they affect you, learning how to handle losing even when you were “supposed” to win, etc… All this can tremendously help you in all aspects of life by making you less impulsive and more rational in your decision-making. Now, this leaves us with our last fundamental principle of a sound poker strategy: - Basic stats and probabilities (i.e. Expected value/Odds) To become an accomplished player, you will inevitably have to learn about these simple mathematical tools that poker players use all the time in their decision-making process, such as odds and expected value. To make it very simple, the expected value (EV) of any bet is (REWARD \ WinRate - RISK), meaning that if you can bet 1000$ with a chance to win 10k$ half of the time, your EV is *(10000\0.5)-1000 = +4000$**. Obviously these are great odds to take as long as you have enough capital to overcome variance. But things would be very different if the odds of winning were only 5% as your EV would then be negative *(10000\0.05)-1000 = -500$.*** Now this is clearly a bet you should not take… Now that you know probabilities, statistics and game theory are useful decision-making tools in poker, guess what? They are also extremely useful in investing! Even better, the study of game theory with problems such as the “Byzantine generals” or the “Three prisoners” has been, along with cryptography, the foundation on which blockchain technology was built, enabling the trustless and decentralized services that are about to revolutionize our world… Assuming this was enough to pique your interest and make you want to dig deeper, I’ll just add that just like the other topics we discussed and as you might have guessed, this translates very well to investing and also to pretty much anything in your life: - Learn how to break down complex situations. Logical thinking paired with a statistical approach will help you break down any complex problem into several easier problems, making the whole thing a lot easier to approach/comprehend. - Base your decisions on a methodical and rational approach. List every possible outcome along with its associated upside/downside, estimate the probability of each outcome to occur and make the best decision based on the information available. My point here is that risk management, emotional management and statistics/game theory are all awesome tools that you should definitely add to your arsenal. Not only will it improve your money-management and investing, it will also be beneficial to your decision-making and to your life in general. Of course poker is not the only way to learn about these, but I personally found it to be the best practice ground to refine and improve them, which is why I strongly encourage you all to try it out and study the game. Well not all, but about 20 coins. I'm just writing this to get it off my chest. Here's my story: After missing my buy at $20 in early 2013 due to my laziness of having to sign up for an exchange, I didn't let my chance slip up later that year: I bought at the peak of the boom in late 2013. I ended up averaging in at about $800 for 40+ BTC ($35k total). I had been successful in an online business, and as a young kid I decided to throw half of my net worth into this magic internet money. I didn't understand the concept of decentralization back then, but I liked the idea of an internet currency, it made sense and I loved taking risks so I went for it. Well shortly after that I discovered Dogecoin (or was it created then?) so naturally I dumped ALL my BTC into it thinking this meme coin would be an even better form of internet money. Over a year or two I watched my crypto dwindle down to sub $2k. At that point I was thinking alright might as well let it go to 0. I eventually switched it all back over to BTC when it went back up to 7-8k (IIRC), but at this point I lost a few BTC, I was down to 30-35 or so. A couple of other memories include spending 0.3 BTC on a porn subscription when BTC was worth $200 or so. I also sent 0.25 BTC to a website that said they would send 1 BTC back, needless to say I'm still patiently waiting for them to send it back. Lost a couple of coins at that casino that was up in 2014 as well, but I forgot the name of it. Anyway, 2017 rolls around, and I break even! I had moved on in my life at this point and having 35k was nice but not life changing, so I never thought about selling at that point... But then that year it just kept climbing and climbing. Once my portfolio hit 100k was when it hit me that something special was going on. I was incessantly checking the prices at work and did more and more research about decentralization and understanding what Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies really were. And that's when I discovered altcoins... Thinking I was ahead of the curve I threw all my BTC into alts right after the BTC Cash fork. Within the next month my ~40 BTC dropped down to 15 (but it stayed about even in $) while BTC was mooning. Dec 2017/Jan 2018 comes and it rockets up to 75 BTC! My portfolio was worth over a million dollars. Wow. I was right in my thinking and I was rewarded for it. Everyone was talking about crypto at that point and I started throwing a BTC into all sorts of alts and ICOs. Luckily I also reluctantly sold 15BTC to lock in some profits, but feared I'd miss the next rally hence the small amount. Turned out to be a good idea - that was the top. Scam after scam, the rest of my coins run down to 20 or so BTC. I was a millionaire on crypto-paper for about a month. Over the next couple of years I ended up holding pure ETH as it eventually dwindled down to sub 100k. Depression hits and I see what could've been, kicking myself for not cashing out. But I knew there would be another bullrun one day so I didn't sell. Fast forward to the COVID crash - I wake up one day to BTC at $3k and knew I had to trade it. My ETH was down to ~12BTC at the time, and being jobless and quarantined, I traded "full time" and ran it all the way up to 100+ BTC (on the way up from 3k-10k). I felt like a god, I called every move and I didn't lose. I was a millionaire again! But only for a moment... I then went on to lose ~75 BTC margin trading. I was taking on ridiculous trades. From July 19 thru September I built up a 1000BTC long position (lol) which got me stopped out when it dipped back down to ~9800. My stop was at 9900 and I lost a massive amount of money. Had I not been stopped out I would've made 10-30 mil. But that's not how it works and I probably would've given it back one way or another. So with my last 25 BTC I forced myself to sit on my hands in spot while I watched it go up and up and up. Anyway here I am now. I'm done riding the crypto rollercoaster. I have been fully exposed to crypto ever since learning about decentralization in 2017. And although I'm extremely bullish on crypto, I'm going to lock in some money so I have a stable lifestyle over the next decade+, as well as diversify my investments. It really does a number to you when your future is uncertain - life with 10k vs 100k vs 1mil vs 10mil net worth is very different, at least for me. I had let money control my mood and life goals over the past few years in both the ups and downs. But there is so much more to life than money and being glued to a screen. I sold about 20 coins for $35k average which will set me right for a very good amount of time. I'm out, I'm done stressing and having sleepless nights. I have major major FOMO that we'll ultra moon from here, but I can't take another cycle of this. A million dollars is a lot of money, and while 10m+ would be nice to have, this is life changing enough for me. Good luck to y'all out there whether you've been around a while or are new to crypto. Crypto has gifted me freedom and I've learned so much over the years. Please remember to take care of yourselves. Bitcoin prices aren't everything. The best thing money can buy you is an awakening to your potential, and for that I am thankful. The real work begins now. I've noticed an influx of newcomers in the recent weeks, this is most likely do to the price swings of XLM. There are now a lot of daily posts of people panicking over micro movements of XLM and how they should react. I decided to make this post to address these concerns and clarify things, coming from someone buying and holding since XLM's inception. "When to buy" I know the price movements are exciting, I got into crypto in the first place trying to profit off of the tail end of the crypto bull market in 2013. When you ask 'should I buy XLM now or later' ask yourself, do you believe in this project? Do you see the Stellar eco-system holding future value? If the answer is yes, then go ahead and put your money where your mouth is. Simple. If it really does well in the future it could land anywhere from $1 to $500 a piece. It won't matter if you bought 10c higher or 10c lower. That being said, if you're really focussed on catching good prices and dips this is my two cents. I always buy XLM in two chunks. Let's say I have $1,000usd and I want to buy XLM but I feel there could be a dip soon. My solution; buy $500 at the current price and then put the other $500 into the market once it dips (what I usually classify as 8 - 30%). Repeat this process and you'll either break even or be in profit. Don't put all your eggs in one basket in once position. Always have money set aside for dips, because they will come. Also I would highly advise not to try and swing trade XLM. You're almost guaranteed to lose, if you want short speculative gain go to the casino. Another thing to consider; volatility. XLM is a very volatile altcoin, I would argue more volatile than any of the other top 10's. Don't panic, it is completely normal to see rapid 8 - 16% drops. I REPEAT, IT IS COMPLETELY NORMAL TO SEE RAPID 8 - 16% DROPS. You don't have to post in here, none of us can predict the future. If short term volatility bothers you get the hell out of crypto. The price while I’ve been writing this has dropped 12% then gone right back up then back down 8%. In this market you should only be macro-bullish, short term is all speculative gambling. Typically pumps are followed by pretty large dips to about the halfway point %wise of the recent pump. Volatility also goes both ways, volatility doesn't mean 'it dips here and there', volatility also means drastic and sharp rises in price. If you see huge pumps expect some backwards action. Focussing on short term price movement will literally drive you insane. Believe and hold. Knowledge is power, the more you educate yourself on this eco-system and this coin you will have gain an edge. I hope someone found this helpful. Silver slam down on Feb 2, 2021 in after hours market
I am just a retard .... With unprecedented demand on the retail side and also unprecendented inflows into ETF ... the price of silver gets slammed down on Feb 2, 2021 between 2am-4am in aftepre hours trading on comex futures market. The SLV etf had to buy or lease over 120M oz over a three day period! There are multiple silver ETF's and the custodian for most/all is JPM. This after hours manipulation is right in your face .... and followed up by a marketwatch headline "Miners decline as JP Morgan downgrades sector and silver prices slide from eight year high" posted at 4:59 am Feb 2, 2021. This is after 10 years of Ted Butler and others pointing out specific days and actions in aftepre hour trading that made no sense. The the CFTC runs another investigation and this time they do find manipulation ... by who ... JPM: https://www.cftc.gov/PressRoom/PressReleases/8260-20 A free market is one where there is supply and demand. As the demand goes up the price goes up and when the demand drops the price goes down. This is NOT what we have in the physical silver market ... because regardless of the supply/demand the market are manipulated by future's contract traders. Feb 2, 2021 is proof beyond any reasonable doubt that the market is and continues to be manipulated. I suspect the manipulation is by the big 8 commercial banks on the COT and also includes some hedge funds. The little investor always gets the short end of the stick ... The CFTC the SEC and the Department of Justice should engage the FBI to investigate this market manipulation. Lets examine that 920M fine being paid by JPM for market manipulations of tens of thousands of times between 2008 and 2016. How much do you think JPM makes in derivatives trading of commodities in a single year? Lets go and find out ... : https://occ.treas.gov/publications-and-resources/publications/quarterly-report-on-bank-trading-and-derivatives-activities/files/pub-derivatives-quarterly-qtr3-2020.pdf Look at page 29 graph 9a and 9b (3 quarters 2020 of revenues in commodity and others derivatives) trading revenue of all commercial and saving and loan banks is 6.062B (1.664B, 2.486B, 1.912B) trading revenue os all holding companies is 2.777B (646, 905, 1226) Total revenue 6.062 + 2.777 = 8.839B for first 3 quarters 2020. Now look at page 35 graph 15 for the amount of derivatives contracts in commodities: JPM : 39B , HSBC : 12B, Citibank : 10B, BOA : 3B, Wells Fargo : 2B Now look at page 43 table 7: Trading revenue from commodities and other positions top 4 commercial banks for Q3 2020 JPM : 734M, GS : 0, Citi : 316M, BOA : 6M So top 4 commercial banks made 1.056B in Q3 alone from derivatives based on commodities and others. I am guessing that the majority of those profits are from the gold and silver commodities. The fine of 920M basically is a slap on the wrist! Given these guys make 734M in Q3 alone ... what will they make over an entire year? Since I am a retard .. lets go back and find the data for Q1 and Q2 and then lets interpolate Q4 and see if this 920M is really that much of fine. In Q2 JPM made 632M from trading derivatives in commodities and others. (table 7 pg49 q2 report) In Q1 JPM made 389M from trading derivatives in commodities and others.(table 7 pg49 q1 report) So that totals 389 + 632 + 734 = 1.755B revenue over first 3 quarters of 2020. Lets assume they make another 500M in Q4 ... this is just a guess ... but that would then total 2.255B for the year. The 920M fine is simply so small it is laughable ... these guys are making over 2B per year and have been doing this manipulation for years. Retards wake up ... SEC, CFTC, Department of Justice, FBI , are NOT doing enough to protect our markets. The criminals never go to jail ... instead they plea bargain and pay fines that are so small it NEVER stops them from going back and doing the same behavior. Sure they throw a few traders under the bus but those at the top never pay a price. Jamie Dimon is the head of JPM. This behavior is NOT a free market .. it is corruption and it is criminal behavior by the biggest market players. I am sick and tired of no rule of law in the market. It is time for all of us retards to stop playing the rigged game. Time for us to move into markets that are not manipulated by big commercial banks via futures market. What is that ... Crypto! I will continue to keep a small silver investment in an etf like sprott. I will no longer play in the rigged game of call options on slv, gld, and or any of the miners. I will move my money out of all the miners gradually and I will build positions in ethereum and bitcoin. The unintended consequence of allowing corruption in the market is that all of us move our money somewhere else ... and out of the rigged casino. I would rather take my risks in the crypto markets then have my money stolen by the big banks with their enormous short positions in gold, silver and also in some of the miners like first majestic. Time for us all to wake up. The puts on Silver future exchange slammed physical silver price down and it took all my profits on Tuesday Feb 2, 2021 ... and now I am losing money ... It will not happen again ... JPM, BOA, CITI, GS, HSBC, BOA, WFC, MS, Barclays, Deutsche Bank you have all screwed up the free market ... and now we are all leaving the game. I regrettable will probably see all these same criminals over in the crypto space over the next few years. My only hope is that fintech will destroy these criminal operations. This retard has had his fill ... I can no longer wait for CFTC, SEC, Department of Justice, and the FBI to bring down criminal trading desks.
Why Triggering the GameStop Infinite Gamma Squeeze is a Terrible Idea
I'll probably be called a billionaire bootlicker or suits simp by wsb fans for this, but please read and consider all the factors I will lay out here: (Disclaimer: if you have participated in the GameStop squeeze, some of this may offend you -- but my point is not to shame anyone for having participated, but to those CONTINUING to participate.) 7 Reasons why you should not continue to participate in the GameStop Short Squeeze (or partake in "hive mind pump and dump schemes".
1 Initial Overview
This GameStop short squeeze has to stop, it's currrently collapsing consumer confidence in the market and creating market volatility, and if the infinite squeeze is triggered -- the hedge funds will be forced to liquidate all their positions from the market. What do you think the market will look like after $10-$100+ billion gets liquidated out of the market? Now you're messing with people's retirement money -- your own family's even, if they have 401k's or Roth IRA's. Don't get me wrong, I invested in GME back in December because I liked where the company was going, their revenue was increasing rapidly, and I heard it could go through a short squeeze. (I didnt realize it would be Worldwide News) I took my profits, but now you have hundreds of thousands of people flooding into the investing market looking to make a quick buck off of GME and AMC -- if you want to gamble, go to a casino.
2 The Justice Has Already Been Delivered
GameStop and AMC now have raised PLENTY of capital to pull themselves away from bankruptcy, (yay we saved two great companies looking to turn themselves around!) and the hedge funds have been bled of 10-25% of their capital for trying to borderline bankrupt these two companies. I'm pretty sure they've learned their lesson. Government and the SEC have stated that they are heavily monitoring the situation, they will likely have a Congressional Hearing, and punishment will be handed down to those Hegde Funds. Now we just need to hold the SEC and Government accountable for implementing regulations against hedge funds. No "slaps on the wrist" or warnings. Be aware though -- there are connections in the current administration with Citadel -- the Hedge Fund behind this chaos. This is why we need to watch the SEC and Government closely to see how they handle this.
3: Making a Mockery of the Stock Market will only hurt Retail Investors and Increase the Wealth Gap.
Personally, I'm just a lower-class normal dude who decided to learn how investing works in April after the market crashed. I saw it as a good time to get in and learn. I've been able to grow my account by over 700%. It has been life changing for me. So many lower-income investors who have been slowly learning and enjoying making steady gains on the market this past year are growing frustrated with this new "hive mind" of retail investors running around "wHaT wE gOnNa pUmP nExT gUyS?!?!" This trend has now spilled over into other stocks. Some of them have "high short interest" like AMC, Bed Bath and Beyond, sure. But others like Nokia, or (NOK), aren't even being shorted! (15% short interest). So people are now riding this hive mind retail swarm into pumping and dumping on rookie investors. (ie. Dogecoin) That's not how this stuff works. It's not "our turn" to manipulate the market. Play by the rules like everyone else that has respect for the market. Not like every hedge fund that has abused the market. You don't "pump" stocks or securities. That's market manipulation. Research and invest in companies with good momentum, financials, or companies you believe in and want to see do better. Not something someone on the internet told you to buy. Commonfolk now have the ability to invest and learn -- make money and improve their lives just like all the rich people who have had easy access to the market for a hundred years! We just have to play by the rules!
5: Triggering the Infinite Gamme Squeeze will bankrupt a couple hedge funds, but also make even bigger Hedge Funds MUCH richer.
One key point the wsb crowd has not even considered is: Look at who the "long investors" who are on GameStop. There are some ugly names that stand to profit WAYYYY more than any retail investors will. Is that what we want to do? Bankrupt a few hedge funds and flow more money into bigger ones? Not me. On top of that, if you don't understand how "whales" move markets, what do you think will happen if GameStop shoots to some epic number? Do you think you'll be able to sell and collect your profits before the billion dollar investment groups with fancy ass computers (and algorithms programmed to lock in an exit strategy) sell before you? Doubt it.
6: We are literally recreating history... Bad History
The people treating the market like a pump and dump casino have no respect for history. Remember the financial collapse of Germany's Weimar Republic back in the 1920's? Read the book "When Money Dies: The Nightmare of Deficit Spending, Devaluation, and Hyperinflation in Weimar Germany" Here are a couple excerpts from that book: "Gambling on the stock exchange had became the fashion-- the only way to avoid losing all one's money and perhaps to add to it. Many new bankers were giving people advice, the flight from the krone governing all transactions." "the large numbers of unemployed, their passions fermented by the Communists, are seething with discontent ... a mob has attempted to set the Parliament building on fire." Sound a little familiar...? the Weimar Republic at the time was also going through a stretch of partisan political extremism. We've also been printing money like crazy. I dont know about you, but I don't want to see our country's financial system collapse.
7: Hypothetical Conspiracy Theory (Put on your tinfoil thinking cap)
Lastly, the CEO of Citadel, the hedge fund overlooking all of this chaos. Look him up -- I would NOT be surprised if the GME Infinite Gamma Squeeze was a foreign adversary's psy-op to get us to collapse our entire stock market. I know that sounds like a conspiracy theory, but just consider it. We've already had our health system collapsed by this foreign adversary, we've already had our government, universities, and businesses infiltrated by this foreign adversary all in the last 10 yearrs. (Plenty of Department of Justice links I can share with you if you need proof of that) Why wouldn't they coordinate a stock market crash as well? If you really wanna "stick it to the hedge funds" -- Learn how to invest, research good stocks/cryptos/investments, make money the honest way, and SHRINK THE WEALTH GAP through dedicated reading and learning. Not by following stupid hive mind retail pump and dumps. TL:DR - To the people trying to trigger an infinite squeeze so they can bleed the entire market dry into their pockets -- this makes you NO better than the hedge funds who did it to our country in 2008-2009. You're just putting our financial system on the brink of collapse. Just gonna end up one side of the same ugly coin -- the same paradigm we hate about our government. I just want to close this by saying thank you if you made it through this novel of an essay. Why you should learn poker and game theory (LONG READ)
Hello everyone! I have only been on Reddit for a few months but I learned so much from it that I figured I should try and give back to the community. English is my second language and this is the first time I ever write a full-length article, I hope you will enjoy reading it and I would be very thankful if you could provide some feedback about my writing, about the topic, or about anything else really… So here goes! Why you should learn poker and game theory: My story is similar to that of many: I learned about the game 10 years ago (during the golden age of online poker) when some friends of mine invited me to play a home game. Although I initially thought of poker as just another game of chance akin to playing slots or roulette in a casino, I quickly came to realize that there is a lot more to it as my more experienced friends would repeatedly get the best of me during these home games, which led me to start watching videos and reading strategy books to improve my skill… Little did I know it’d be the start of a journey that would impact many different aspects of my life way beyond the game itself, as most of the fundamental principles learned through poker can be applied to your decision-making outside of the game, especially when it comes to money management and investing. Now, let’s dive into a few of these principles: - Risk management (i.e. Bankroll management) When learning about how to be successful playing poker, the first big piece of advice most people come across is bankroll management or BRM. To understand BRM, you must first realize that poker has a lot of variance: you might be vastly ahead in a given hand but there is almost always a slim chance that you will lose in the end if one specific card hits. This implies that you will sometimes lose even though you were a 99% favorite, and that you will sometimes get unlucky and lose 2, 5 or maybe even 20 such encounters in a row. THIS is variance. It doesn’t mean that you played bad or that you made bad decisions, but rather that you got unlucky. Over time you will have lucky streaks and unlucky streaks, and these will average out in the long term… It’s just the way the game goes. Now that we understand variance, let’s get back to BRM. What is it exactly? Let’s say you are the best poker player in the world but you only have 1000$ that you can EVER use to play with. Taking your whole 1000$ on one table and multiplying your stack at an exponential rate might seem like a good idea. Surely nothing can go wrong since you’re the best player in the world right? But variance can be a bitch ;) Even if you’re the best you will lose regularly and you will sometimes get unlucky, it’s just part of the game. The correct move here is to apply BRM, which means only using a small % of your available capital for each game you play in order to reduce the risk of going broke. Using only 100$ per game would already be a lot safer, but you still run the risk of going under on a streak of bad luck. If you only allocate 10$ per game you play, then it becomes virtually impossible for you to ever go broke, even on a huge streak of bad luck. Sure it’s not as exciting and you won’t be making money quite as fast as you could, but this is the way to go to make sure you don’t go broke… This approach to risk management translates very well to investing: - Only invest what you can afford to lose. Once the money is on the table it’s as good as gone, which is why you should only use your “spare” cash and never invest with your living expenses or worse, borrow money to invest. - Diversify your investments. There is always a chance, however slim it might be, that you will lose most of your investment. This is why going all-in on a specific investment is generally a bad idea (this applies particularly well in the crypto space). Proper BRM allows you to make sure that you will come out ahead in the long run if you play well, which basically comes down to making more good decisions than bad ones. But that’s assuming you don’t let emotions come in the way of your decision-making, which brings us to our next point… - Emotional management (i.e. Handling tilt/Positive mindset) Nobody likes losing… In the same way we enjoy winning because of the dopamine rush, we feel bad when we lose which is totally natural. Overcoming this and avoiding tilt (irrational decisions made out of angefrustration) is an essential skill for any successful poker player. You might play a sound game of poker and apply good BRM, but you will still lose if you let your emotions get the best of you. After a loss, rather than being angry and frustrated, you should evaluate your decision-making. If your decision-making was good, you just got unlucky and you shouldn’t worry about it since you are playing for the long run (remember that variance teaches us that anything can happen in the short-term). If your decision-making was bad, you need to learn from your mistakes and move on. The key here is to always have a positive mindset: making mistakes is part of the learning process and should be seen as an occasion to improve. Being angry and ranting, on the other hand, rarely result in anything positive. Again, this translates very well to investing: - Don’t be impulsive, don’t let your emotions cloud your judgment. You should not FOMO because the price is pumping, nor should you sell because of FUD or price corrections. If you believe in a project, short-term price changes (did I hear someone say “variance”?) shouldn’t bother you. - Don’t get stuck up on losses. You bought the top and it crashed immediately after? You sold the bottom right before a huge rally? Don’t let this bother you: what’s done is done and you just need to move on and make the best of your current situation. - Have a positive mindset. Anger and frustration lead to nothing. Yes you could have bought in 2009 when you first heard about it, hindsight is always 20/20. Stay positive and keep learning/improving yourself. The good thing about all this is that it goes way beyond poker or investing. Being aware of your emotions and how they affect you, learning how to handle losing even when you were “supposed” to win, etc… All this can tremendously help you in all aspects of life by making you less impulsive and more rational in your decision-making. Now, this leaves us with our last fundamental principle of a sound poker strategy: - Basic stats and probabilities (i.e. Expected value/Odds) To become an accomplished player, you will inevitably have to learn about these simple mathematical tools that poker players use all the time in their decision-making process, such as odds and expected value. To make it very simple, the expected value (EV) of any bet is (REWARD \ WinRate - RISK), meaning that if you can bet 1000$ with a chance to win 10k$ half of the time, your EV is *(10000\0.5)-1000 = +4000$**. Obviously these are great odds to take as long as you have enough capital to overcome variance. But things would be very different if the odds of winning were only 5% as your EV would then be negative *(10000\0.05)-1000 = -500$.*** Now this is clearly a bet you should not take… Now that you know probabilities, statistics and game theory are useful decision-making tools in poker, guess what? They are also extremely useful in investing! Even better, the study of game theory with problems such as the “Byzantine generals” or the “Three prisoners” has been, along with cryptography, the foundation on which blockchain technology was built, enabling the trustless and decentralized services that are about to revolutionize our world… Assuming this was enough to pique your interest and make you want to dig deeper, I’ll just add that just like the other topics we discussed and as you might have guessed, this translates very well to investing and also to pretty much anything in your life: - Learn how to break down complex situations. Logical thinking paired with a statistical approach will help you break down any complex problem into several easier problems, making the whole thing a lot easier to approach/comprehend. - Base your decisions on a methodical and rational approach. List every possible outcome along with its associated upside/downside, estimate the probability of each outcome to occur and make the best decision based on the information available. My point here is that risk management, emotional management and statistics/game theory are all awesome tools that you should definitely add to your arsenal. Not only will it improve your money-management and investing, it will also be beneficial to your decision-making and to your life in general. Of course poker is not the only way to learn about these, but I personally found it to be the best practice ground to refine and improve them, which is why I strongly encourage you all to try it out and study the game.
