Nugu Roundup #48 - On Again Off Again - 200719 + Album Giveaway
Hello and welcome to the latest Nugu Roundup! What is this?: This is a weekly feature designed to highlight the unknown/underappreciated groups and soloists working hard in the Kpop world that often fall under the radar. Please share your own information, favorite performance videos, fanmeet stories, or anything else relevant below!
Last week we got to know the socially conscious idol group Flor_us. This week let's check out a boy group who was recently on MNet's Road to Kingdom, let's spend some time with ONF!
Look at the first comment below for the winner of the third Nugu Roundup Album Giveaway, plus details on this week's album up for grabs! What is Nugu?: While in Korean it literally means 'Who' in the broader Kpop context it refers to groups that are generally unknown amongst the greater public. It doesn't have to mean they're extremely new, though it can, and there are of course varying degrees of 'unknown' which some groups having very strong niche fandoms and others being almost invisible. I take a fairly broad view and will include groups that may be known to some, but who don't have widespread name recognition.
Let's get on with the show... ________________________________________________________
ONF Who are they?: ONF is a six member boy group under WM Entertainment. Their name means 'On N Off' meaning they want to show different sides of themselves as if they were turning on and off. The group is subdivided into two three-member lines, the vocal-centric 'On' line, and the dance/performance-centric 'Off' line. Their fandom name is Fuse, which they say is a combination of 'ONF' and 'Muse' meaning their fans are their inspiration, plus a Fuse protects and electrical circuit and in the same way they protect each other.
Company: WM Entertainment is most well known for the girl group Oh My Girl and the long-running boy group B1A4. The company was founded by singer Lee Won-min, previously known as Kim Jung-soo, who was a singer himself and former manager of 1st-gen girl group Papaya.

Debut: August 1st, 2017 with On/Off (
MV) Live Stage (
link) Dance Practice (
link)
- Song: The lead single from their debut EP On/Off. According to WM the song is in the 'Chill-Out House' genre, which seems adjacent to tropical house, but has a nice relaxing and fresh presentation. With a pleasant melody, some surprisingly potent vocal moments, and a very cool breakdown in the latter part of the chorus this debut manages to toe the line between trendy and unique expertly. The MV features some cool space themes.
- Composers/Producers: NOPARI (MonoTree) (Nature - Girls and Flowers, Ladies' Code - Galaxy, Red Velvet - Blue Lemonade), Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (GFriend - Apple, KARA - With, Loona - Hi High)
Most Recent Comeback: October 7th, 2019 with Why (
MV) Special (choreo) MV (
MV) Live Stage (

- Song: The lead single from their most recent EP Go Live, this is a dark synth-driven track that still features a strong anthemic chorus and moody emotional vocal lines. The MV is shot beautifully with an obviously high budget and features a very cool sci-fi/cyberpunk/augmented-reality theme.
- Composers/Producers: Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (see above), MK (group member)
Other MVs and Releases - Original (performance version) Live Stage (link)
- Song: The second promoted track from their debut On/Off EP, this dance/house track let's their performance line shine.
- Composers/Producers: GDLO (MonoTree) (Yukika - Yesterday, ELRIS - Roopretelcham, Pristin - Aloha)
- Cats Waltz (special clip) Live Performance (link)
- Song: The third promoted single from their debut EP On/Off, this down-tempo R&B song features some lovely crunchy harmonies and is a beautiful showcase of the vocal line.
- Composers/Producers: Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (see above), NOPARI (MonoTree) (see above)
- Complete (MV) Live Stage (link) Dance Practice (link)
- Song: The lead single from the group's 2nd EP You Complete Me, this release is bright and relentlessly upbeat and one of the freshest boy group comebacks I can recall. Eschewing the common trap-break tempo slowdown in the rap section and switching the expected EDM drop for a bright sax-and-synth driven instrumental interlude this song keeps a smile on your face as the boys dance around in another expertly-shot high-budget MV.
- Producers/Composers: Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (see above)
- Fly Me to the Moon (special clip) Live Stage (link)
- Song: The second promoted single from their You Complete Me EP, this is another chance for the performance unit to shine with some fun choreography. Light EDM dance makes way for a very fun and unexpected sax-driven dance break towards the end.
- Composers/Producers: Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (see above), Lee Joo Hyung (MonoTree) (B1A4 - Only One, SNSD - Wait a Minute, Taeyeon - When I Was Young)
- Timing (MV) Live Stage (link)
- Song: A special WM Family Winter Song collaboration between Oh My Girl, B1A4, and ONF.
- Composers/Producers: Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (see above), Mimi (Oh My Girl group members), Wyatt (group member)
- We Must Love (MV) Live Stage (link) Dance Practice (link)
- Song: The lead single from the group's third EP We Must Love, this is described as in the 'Future Bass' genre and features a strong penetrating bass synth in the arrangement. Some vocal elements still shine through, and the MV features some beautiful set pieces and continues with the group's sci-fi/techno themes.
- Composers/Producers: Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (see above)
- Yayaya (audio) Live Stage (link)
- Song: The second promoted single from their third EP We Must Love. Another performance-team showcase with the as-always-excellent choreography, this one immediately jumped out at me as I was listening because I'm just a sucker for prominent string parts in songs. The unexpected jazz breakdown towards the end is just as much a special treat.
- Composers/Producers: Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (see above), NOPARI (MonoTree) (see above), Choi Young Kyung (최영경) (MonoTree) (Dreamcatcher - R.o.S.E. Blue, Heejin (Loona) - Vivid, CLC - Breakdown)
- All Day (special clip) Live Performance (Link)
- Song: While not promoted on music shows, this is the 2nd song from their fourth EP We Go Live to receive a promotional video. The MV shows a backdrop of their travels during their live concert tour.
- Composers/Producers: Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (see above), NOPARI (MonoTree) (see above), Justin Reinstein (N.Flying - Good Bam, GFriend - Creme Brulee, GWSN - All Mine (Coast of Azure)), Aurori (오로리) (no other credits found)
- Moscow Moscow (lyric video) Live Stage (link)
- Song: The third promoted single from their fourth EP Go Live, this dark and moody vocal driven song does sound like it as some Eastern European influence. With subdued vocal lines in the verse, an intense but low-key rap segment, and a rich chorus this is a treat for the ears.
- Composers/Producers: Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (see above)
- Message (MV)
- Song: Described as a 'gift film' this special non-album single did not receive any promotion, and appears to be a special song for the fans. It's a beautiful ballad with a nice upbeat groove underneath.
- New World (special clip) Road To Kingdom Stage (link)
- Song: The original song released by ONF for the Road To Kingdom Finale, this song packs a ton of different styles into itself but remains high energy throughout (and as a side note the tweeting in the instrumental interlude momentarily made me think a bird had gotten into my house)
- Composers/Producers: Hwang Hyun (황현) (MonoTree) (see above)
YouTube Channel: ONF Official Random Stuff Trivia: The group came in 2nd place overall in the recent MNet competition show Road to Kingdom, losing out to The Boyz who will be moving to the full Kingdom competition show. The group's first stage appearance was as backup dancers for B1A4 in the 2016 Dream Concert. The group has toured around the world including Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, France, Switzerland, Russia, and Bulgaria. They had plans to do a Latin America tour, but it was canceled due to COVID-19. Other candidates for the group's name before debut were MeToo and Zero. The group has had large gaps between comebacks due to various issues but has recently been gaining attention due to their appearance in Road to Kingdom.

IN MEMORIAM CUPID Who were they?: A four member girl group under IN Entertainment and Narda Entertainment. They were plagued by a rapid succession of member changes during their short run, having 9 members come through the group during three years.
Releases - I Feel Good (MV) Live Stage (Link)
- Song: Their debut, April 29th, 2015. An EDM-Dance style song. The group's lineup was interesting for a four-member group with two rappers.
- A Woman on the Beach (with Rion Five) (MV) Live Stage (Link)
- Song: Their first special summer collaboration song. Before this release members Sarang and Nanayuri left the group, being replaced by Amin and Pureum. However the group then changed companies leading to Amin, Pureum, and original member Jenna leaving, with Amin staying with the old company to redebut in Fantastie. After the move original member Nanayuri rejoined the group for this comeback.
- Sea (with Chic Angel) (MV) Live Stage (Link)
- Song: The group's second special summer collaboration single. There was a special Christmas single between this and the last, however any videos of performances seem to no longer exist online. In between this and the last comeback two new members, Dohee and Seolyi joined the group, with Seolyi leaving before this comeback. They also added a new member Hyemi, who then changed her stage name to SaetByeol, then back to Hyemi. Nanayuri left the group for a second time, the members competed in MixNine, and then came back as a trio to collaborate with Chic Angel for this song, which would be their last.
- Composers/Producers: Jang Young-jin (no other credits found)
Active Between: April 2015 - Sometime in 2019
Reasons for Disbanding: While no official statement was given, the rapid-fire membership changes and reliance on collaborations with other groups along with switching companies seems to indicate a lack of financial stability for the group.
Trivia: Member Dohee, who has also gone by Blue Berry and Solhee, has been involved in other groups including ICIA, Scarlet, and Pocket Girls. She is now a soloist and recently released Rain Drop (
audio). Member Amin, who has also been a member of Honey Girls, HeyMiss, and Fantastie, was recently announced as a new member of HeyGirls using the stage name Jein following the departure of original member Jandi and member Siyeon. ___________________________________________________

Why socialism is unfounded in political theory.
During Steven's discussion with Ian, one of the challenges that was tabled was that political theory should not be dismissed. I have a problem with this statement as, surely certain political theory at a certain point, after being tested vigorously and, when it remains stagnant for 2 centuries, one should be able to have conclusions regarding its viability.
What do I mean by unfounded? Well, one needs a foundation in order to start correct? You start with premises, justify them and once you have a valid position you can build from that initial foundation and move onto other arguments that infer from that initial springboard. The problem with socialism is that, it never went back to those foundational principles in order to correct vs the criticisms that manifested in the 2 centuries during its inception. So what you have, in reality, is an unfounded paradigm that exists only because people keep adopting it as an identity and, through their own tribalism, keep it in discourse.
In this thread, I plan on illustrating those foundational flaws as well as challenging the paradigm's viability using modern behavioral sciences.
There are far more learned people than I that have already tackled socialism throughout the centuries since its foundation. A course that illustrates this can be found on Yale's YouTube site, which I've watched in its entirety. The course is given by Professor Ian Shapiro and titled Moral Foundations of Politics.
The segment on Marx goes through his contributions during the enlightenment period and, more importantly, what criticisms manifested
illustrating foundational flaws within the paradigm. It's why even 'socialist economists', which I consider an oxymoron, like Prof Richard Wolff, conceded that LTV is not a viable microeconomic theory. Has it been replaced with anything in order to give support to everything that followed from it regarding the theory of exploitation? No. We've moved onto discussing co-ops, pretending that the initial problem never happened.
This is one of the reasons why, considering we're dealing with political theory, my first question to any socialist is always, what's your microeconomic theory that is supposed to replace what we currently have? The response is always dead silence or, someone starts defending LTV and then I bring out the criticisms against it. The only conclusion one can draw is that there IS no economic theory that has been allocated to replace what Marx started 2 centuries ago. Moreover, it needs to align with what follows as well, when it comes to exploitation theory.
What about from a behavioral perspective? Well, the behavioral sciences have come pretty far in the 2 centuries socialists have been trying to ram their square peg in a round hole, only to commit a no true Scotsman fallacy when it fails. One such experiment was
the Robber's Cave experiment, which caused scientists to shape the landscape in terms of tribal psychology.
Capitalism is the necessary conclusion to economic empirical research. Socialism, considering it has no economic empirical research to speak of, and doesn't meet the criteria of even beginning to be considered political theory without those foundational keystones, is merely a cultish tribe based on vapid specters of the 19th century. This is why you have people like Paul Krugman who study Bernie Sander's policy and conclude that he's a social-democrat. Not a democratic socialist. And why, Prof Richard Wolff doesn't challenge this assertion.
Because he can't. This is why the world and economists have moved on because they've had 2 centuries to study economics and revise capitalism, in order to optimize it for not only ensuring prosperity for the world but also, tying collective well being to that end. It's extremely robust, complicated but, the prescriptive actions that have come out of it, have increased well being overall for the entire world, since its inception and implementation. Because it's primarily empirical. Socialism is not.
When one becomes an economist, this isn't an identity. It's not a tribe. It's a field. That's the stark difference. Socialism on the other hand has very specific claims, which are universal in their application that everyone collectively subscribes to. In order to become an economist, one is required to go to school, get a degree and work towards a career in that field. In order to become a socialist, all one needs to do is be suggestible, join a discord server, hang out with people and, as a result of that interaction, adopt a belief. As a result, it's susceptible to the pitfalls that come from having an identity driven paradigm.
What are some of these pitfalls that can manifest by adopting a tribe? There are universal problems, however conflicts depend on the outgroups that the tribe designates. The 'You Are Not So Smart' podcast episodes on Tribalism, Uncivil Agreement and the 4 part episode on the backfire effect are
great resources to understand these pitfalls, in detail.
Socialists, by the very act of ignoring empirical reality and adopting an unfounded cult, inherit that baggage. Their entire perception and, ability to judge things rationally as a result, will be impaired. It's to the point where any challenge to things they've adopted through social sorting and not by rational conclusion, will light up the parts of their brain that deal with 'threat' and 'self'. They'll fall into patterns of performative ethics,
which is entirely an egoistical endeavor to get validation from one's ingroup. This is why when it comes time for socialists to practice what they preach by voting for Bernie or starting co-ops, they fall short. It's why the only time you'll see socialism manifest on a large scale is when that society's back is against the wall and they're extremely suggestible to any kind of systematic change, thinking it's the current structure that failed them. It's why usually this comes from an uneducated population that is of peasant class, and not a fully developed society working from empirical economics.
It's also why these individuals become extremely toxic. When you designate 'the establishment' as your outgroup, 'the bourgeoisie', none of these are empirical categorizations. There's no magic number when it comes to one's savings that saves one from this classification. So, anyone who is or has done well is fair game for dehumanization. When it comes to tribal psychology and, the Robber's Cave experiment, this leads to manufacturing falsehoods because one is looking for validation within the group and not because one actually has a valid criticism and solution. This is why they don't focus on policy but moral accounting, which is doomed to be tainted by their own tribal identity. It's why a gay man, running for public office, gets labelled a faggot. And why, when people challenge that, they use the post hoc justification that they weren't being homophobic but, in actuality, were calling him a fascist. Like that's any better.
I could go on citing examples of how tribal behaviours manifest, but I think you get the point. This is your brain on socialism, why it's untenable, why the demographic doesn't bother engaging with any of the prescriptive actions proposed and why, if by a miracle, it happens to manifest in revolution, it always fails. It ignores economics, it ignores behavioral science and therefore is an unfounded, unviable political theory.
It's cultish, useless and anyone practicing it is just sipping Kool 'Aid. Including Vaush.
Thanks for your time.

Historically Themed Soviet Battlegroups
With the release of the full version of SD2 to the general public tomorrow, I thought people might appreciate some historically themed Soviet battlegroups they can use in pvp multiplayer or pve skirmish. Why might you, the reader want to read further and even potentially import some of these decks?
- Its fun!
- If you're a new player starting the game, it can be a bit overwhelming to figure out what units to make your first battlegroups out of, I've included a variety of units in each of these divisions
including some bad ones, so you'll be able to get an idea of which units you like.
- Because the decks are designed based on divisional TOE's
rather than picking good units, balance changes are less liable to cause you to need to rework your decks since the battlegroups aren't largely based around a single unit.
- If you like me, when you play PvE, it gets really irritating to play against a few AI battlegroups that have all of the best units available and none of the bad units. I like using these battlegroups for the AI when playing PvE skirmish mode.
So, without further ado, lets get to it!
Tank Corps Division:
2nd Guards Tank Corps Deck code: DCRCGiCEIS0FTD6VisABQnYAFLYAAQJ2ABYCBBVCIj6SCWVpGiJBVRslahw+ACCrgAEB7AAUEa5lKOIAEE7AiYJ2ABAJBBUG1D6ROaVpAbQ+lVSgAUVGABRyAAED+FaYPC45KiRWlHFgASa+ACBsIAFGugAVaoAChsQAFGxAAA==
Gameplay tips:
2nd Guards Tank corps has a strong armoured core consisting of 45 T-34-85's in addition to 20 T-34-76's. While you may be at a disadvantage against German divisions based on Panthers and Tigers, with good use of terrain and smoke to get close, you can triumph over them by weight of numbers. You also have a limited number of ISU-152 self-propelled guns, that can either be used to obliterate anti-tank guns from long range, or can be used to gently encourage German tanks to disengage from 2000 m engagements.
Potential upgrades:
The first thing you should do is fix the infantry tab. I was modelling a Soviet tank brigade, which has about 300 infantrymen total, which is simply too little for practical use. Another consideration is the artillery tab, I've included 5 different units, you should probably decide which one's are your favourites and cut the rest.
Division:
29th Tank Corps Deck Code: DCRDGiCEIS2CfAAZa+ABARrmUGwgAUa2ABRsIAKGxAAUbEABAJBBVBGuZhw+ACCrgAFWYFaYPC45BtQ+kD+FaUcWABWzgAEBkMaQVMPpRyAAEqJFaVVKABIJZWkjmFaUNAABSEoAEXaAAQysABBOwHUFOgARoiQVBmI+lgIEFA==
Gameplay tips:
I'll be honest, you can basically take everything written above and apply it here, except with IS-2's instead of ISU-152's. Generally the way I recommend using the IS-2 is to set them up in a line spaced about 1 km apart, with a few T-34's nearby (ideally the cheap T-34-76's), and leaders following after them. As you push across a field, unless your opponent is specifically micromanaging potential ambushing AT guns, they will open up on your sacrificial tanks that are screening the IS-2, followed by the remainder of your vehicles destroying the potentially threatening AT weapon. Also, the IS-2 is vulnerable at around 1200-1400 m to the Panther and Tiger, so you should attempt to maintain at least 1500 m separation from them.
Potential Upgrades:
As above, fix the infantry tab. Also, you have 3 cards that give you IS-2's (1 cmd, 2 normal), which I would highly recommend taking all of. Shift some of the phase B tank cards to phase A, cut 2 of the T-34 cards for my IS-2's, and you'll be happy. In the AT tab I have both SU-85's and M10's, you may wish to cut one of those if you find you prefer the other.
Division:
3rd Guards Tank Corps Deck Code: DCTBDRhCEJaJPQAKE/AAwT8AEDBgAKMGAAwwYACrAgAIDbH0oNofSIEB9KgQH1IJCOCo2SCo0RIKgeFyih4XHMHhcchFMACkUwAIaVAApaUADDkAAIJ1H0gMhjSg8AALD8AAo5AACISytICNcygPAAChHnHMWlAAhVwACFWAAQ4fAAA=
Gameplay tips:
I swear that my divisions aren't all carbon copies of one another, it just happens that the first three basically are The Soviet pre-order division
coming soon to a dlc ETA 6 months from now 3rd Gds tank corps is on paper quite similar to the preceding two divisions, but there are two significant differences. Firstly, your trusty T-34-85 has been replaced with Shermans (A little trivia: the nickname used, "Emcha" comes from the phonetic pronunciation of "Mч"). Second, the heavy tank support in this division is provided by the IS-2 obr 1944, the upgraded version of the IS-2 available in 29th Tank Corps. In practice, its effectively the same vehicle except with 180 mm of frontal armour rather than 160. In combination, as you can no longer rely on your standard medium tank out-gunning any German tank that isn't a panther or Tiger, and your main tank can't really fight them effectively except at close range, you'll want to be far more aggressive with 3rd Gds Tank Corps than you are with 29th Tank Corps. Fortunately, the Sherman is the best cqc medium tank available, and with its improved frontal armour, the IS-2 obr 1944 is able to close to shorter ranges without risking destruction.
Potential upgrades:
Will I surprise anyone by suggesting fixing the infantry tab? Unlike the two divisions above, I think you will desire a more dramatic overhaul with 3rd Gds TC; with 2GTC and 29TC, you have a reasonable chance of winning a long game due to having 65 medium tanks + 6 units of heavy armour supporting you. With 3GTC, you no longer can expect to win the long game, as powerful as the IS-2 obr 1944 is, you can't expect a mere 8-10 of them to carry you to victory against a relentless horde of Panthers. I would suggest revamping your build to vanguard, and attempting to win a short game instead. The Sherman rush is a potent tactic, and unlike the other practitioners, only 3 GTC can call upon the IS-2 obr 1944 to trump any Panther or Tiger that shows up to spoil your fun.
just make sure you bring AA/ASF to stop it from dying to cluster AT planes Mechanized Divisions Disclaimer: I'm kind of ignoring the game's designations here, and using ones that make more sense instead. In a Soviet context, mechanized divisions are essentially tank divisions with more infantry, rather than motorized infantry divisions with more tanks. Consequently, I'm grouping the three divisions that fall under that rubric together rather than following the game's classifications.
Division:
3rd Guards Mechanized Corps Deck Code: DCRIGlCEIS0WBAAUTqPpBOwXmGDAAUtmABGjbGoWDAAYcgABRyAAEQIEFhw+ACCrgAFRslaYEa5lELAAFGDAAUCQPpEJZWlVSgASQZSBAewAFBGuZUBQABg8LjlDwuOQP4VpQ/hWlISAAQyuACDDoAEUnUgZAg45QbTjkBtuOYG245QbbjlWDAAA
Gameplay tips:
Unlike the Soviet tank corps, which basically work one way only, you can used 3rd Gds Mechanized in one of two ways depending on what you're up against. If you're fighting a German panzer division, you'll want to try and finish the game as quickly as you can, since in the late game you will severely struggle against panthers and Tigers armed only with Shermans. In this match-up, you'll want to use your strong infantry + tank & mortar support to push into defensible forested positions, and then defeat German counter-attacks with close-range attacks from your AT infantry and Shermans (which, though it might change in the future, are rather busted in cqc because their .50 mg can stun enemy tanks). Against German infantry divisions, you'll want to play in roughly the same fashion: attacking early to gain a points lead, but unlike a German tank division, 3rd Gds Mechanized is actually quite favoured against most German infantry divisions, you have just as much infantry as they do, and rather than having 10-20 meh tanks, you have 40+ of the best tank at a medium price point.
Potential Upgrades:
I would suggest fixing the availability of the sherman cards, I took them at vet 1 because I wanted exactly 42. You, probably won't care. (Although the phase A shermans only lose 1 unit for vet 1, so that's probably worth keeping). Since both strategies with this division involve attacking aggressively in the early game, and you have basically no expensive units, vanguard seems like an ideal choice for this division. Another consideration is that I deliberately excluded the partisan units available (because they aren't in the TOE), but I've been told that the partisan squad with the molotov is extremely broken. You might want to try that out.
Division:
Group Tyurin Deck Code: DCRKGjCEIS0GZD6UVKABhmLjmQIOOVAg45BmI+kihuOVZgVpGiJBVCNxwUIi45g/hWkD+FaRaoABBroAFGugAZa6ABRyAAIcPgASJIVpKiRWlBGuZhCWVqQJDjkDmlaQI845QjzjoItAAUiuABS6QAIKuAAYukABBOwIoMOgAUZk44A=
Gameplay Tips:
On the surface, Group Tyurin looks very similar to 3rd Gds mechanized, and would suggest a similar play style would be needed. This is, broadly speaking, correct. You have a bunch of cheap tanks, a lot of cheap infantry, you'll want to push out in phase A, and then hold on to your gains while the Germans try to counterattack later in the game. Group Tyurin has a few interesting differences with 3rd Gds Mechanized however. Firstly, as its based on a regular, rather than guards formation, you use strelki for your main infantry rather than gvardiya. Consequently, if you happen to check the stats of the Strelki DP squad, you'll notice that due to being armed with 2 LMG's and with semi-automatic rather than bolt-action rifles, you have access to possibly one of the best all-around infantry units in the game, and it costs 25 pts. And you get 3 cards.
Of which I only took 2 It may not be as exciting as I'm making it out to be, but just keep in mind that your main infantry unit is superior to the typical infantry unit you get in any of the tank heavy mobile corps.
Main difference number 2: You use T-34's instead of Shermans. On the bright side, they cost less. On the not so bright side, they are significantly worse. Try to stay safe out there while doing your early game rushes.
Difference 3: You have an absurdly large AT tab. I mean, look at that thing. Unlike basically every other battlegroup in the game, you actually do have the AT gun availability to trade guns 1:1 with tanks and come out ahead.
If you keep these differences in mind, you can be successful with largely the same strategy as I recommended using for 3rd Gds Mechanized.
Potential Upgrades:
So, for one thing, there are several more T-34-76 cards that I didn't take because I wanted 43 tanks. If you cut a few other areas, such as the artillery tab, or maybe the anti-tank tab a little, you can easily add another 20+ T-34's to your lineup. In fact, if you switch to vanguard deployment, and cut a few of the late-game options that you won't (ideally) need, you'll be able to shift availability into phase A and B with your tanks and bring a frankly absurd number of them early in the game. The Sherman might be a better tank, but you can't get 24 phase A shermans without sacrificing nearly all of your mid-late game potential, while you can do so without much difficulty with the T-34.
Division:
9th Guards Cavalry Deck Code: DCRLGkCEIS0C4OOULg45guDjkS3uOgw6ABkt7jlS2OOSqCNFaoI0UqhDRUJKVqHD4AEbPAAkYMABQiLjmDwuOQP445Q/jjmD+OOhCWVpQJDjkqJOUQGQxpEtpWlHIAAQEa5lRy4AGHLgAUucABV94AFG0gAUo045BOwHYKuAAQYMABJgQAA=
Note: Arguably, you could call this an infantry division. However, cavalry corps were used as part of the exploitation force in Soviet offensives, and are lightly equipped (i.e. no heavy artillery) in the same way that the other mobile forces are, rather than equipped with the heavy artillery of a rifle division. Consequently, I have included it in this section.
Gameplay Tips:
The infantry units available in this division are a little weird, with your main rifle squad both being rather small, and also having more SMG's and fewer bolt-actions than line infantry typically do. However, if you consider that bolt-action rifles are complete garbage, and that most battles in open ground are won based on A) who has more LMG's and B) who has more semi-automatic rifles, you can see that having fewer bolt-action rifles than standard actually barely matters at all. In close terrain, which is where infantry are most necessary, the increased number of SMG's in each squad helps your line infantry out-fight opposing line infantry; while you still lose to specialized cqc squads, at least your opponent needs cqc squads to beat you rather than vice versa. Note as well the card of SVT riflemen, while you might think from their high availability and low cost that these units are weak, they're actually really strong due to their high strength and number of semi-automatic rifles. Use these in open terrain, your SMG squads in close terrain, and your line rifle squads whenever you need something to fill the gap, and you'll do fine. Special note: Your AT is not very good, so you'll need to rely on the Osnaz teams to destroy heavily armoured German tanks. The Shermans, fortunately, can easily destroy anything smaller than a panther.
Potential Upgrades:
There are a few more tank cards available that you might want, and the division could easily lose some of its mortars; no-one actually
needs 36 mortars.
especially not with 6 supply trucks As with the previous two 'mechanized' divisions, 9th Gds Cavalry has a strong early game but no real way to fight late game panther hordes, so an early focused Vanguard build is recommended.
Infantry Divisions Division:
26th Guards Rifle Deck Code: DCRHmmCEIS1DwuOQP4VpQiLjmD+FaSJKVpkh4AFaIuOUycABIobjlihuORGyVpAbTjlBtuOYG045UCDjmQIOOQG245EngAFC0AARawABKiTlFCdgAYJ2ABRyAAGHIAAQqwACEJZWlCPOOUHgABgeAAEHMgAQi0ABSLQAEMnAAgw6ABHD4AIKuAAVsyAA
Gameplay tips:
As the class A Soviet rifle division, 26th Guards has all of the cool toys you might want. Heavy tanks that are close to being as good as the Tiger against the lower tier medium tanks? Check. The ISU-152 that obliterates any soft target with ease? Check. Super-heavy radio-controlled artillery pieces that aim in an extremely short amount of time and can stun infantry units by landing shells 100 m behind them? Check. SMG squads that dual-wield flamethrowers?
Essentially, anything you might want for attacking, you've got it. On the defensive, things aren't so good, your AA tab is quite weak, your AT tab is quite weak, and while the tank tab is good at bullying low tier German tanks, it won't stand up well against the Panther hordes that await. A final tip on the 203 mm; your only radio source is the Vzvod UPR leader unit, so keep him safe. As well, the 203 mm is unarmoured and easily destroyed with counterbattery fire. I would recommend placing all 4 guns in 4 widely spaced locations so that A) there isn't a juicy cluster of artillery tracers to CB, and B) if you do get CB-ed, you only lose one gun. Another tip is that while the guns fire 4 shells in a salvo, one is often enough (especially if all 4 guns are bound to the same control group). What I usually do is issue the fire command, wait for the guns to fire, then use my Z key to turn on "hold fire". Unless your opponent really doesn't have much to do, their counterbattery loop will typically involve seeing shells hit his units, zooming his camera out to see your back-line, and then pin-pointing the firing location. If you only ever fire 1 round per gun per target, a typical opponent will find it very hard to successfully counterbattery.
Potential Upgrades:
I feel like this division is actually pretty good as is There are a few sub-optimal units I threw in for fun, now that you've gotten to this point, maybe you'd like to try and figure out what they are? ;)
Division:
44th Guards Rifle Deck code: DCRImkCEIS0DmlaZAg45gbTjkW1EFQG046QbbjmWwgARGyVpIkpWkqJFaYP4VpQSEcFHIAAhCWVpQjzjkmwgAUEa5lARrmWLVgAQHsABA/hWlVNgAUPC45QiLjmSNxbQVM46CrgAIcPgAQiiABSKIAFWwgAWa+ACDDoAEVNgAUtWABUbJWg=
Gameplay tips:
In a lot of ways, this division is a slightly less flashy version of 26th Guards Rifle. That being said, "less flashy" is certainly not a bad thing. Unlike 26th GRD, you don't have the same number of extremely powerful, but also very specialized units. Instead, you get a bunch of solid replacements. In your tank tab you have a nice selection of T-34-85 medium tanks; not as exciting as the KV-85, but you get a good number more of them. Your SU-152 doesn't have the fearsome AP shell of the ISU-152, but it also costs only 75 pts and has the same ability to completely destroy any soft target with ease. Your AA tab also has a nice selection of reasonably costed AA pieces, something 26th GRD can only dream of. Overall, you're a more well-rounded division that is well suited for whatever situation you might get yourself into, unless its fighting hordes of panthers, in which case you'll wish you had the ISU-152 still.
Potential upgrades:
As I said before, I think I actually did a rather good job with the rifle divisions, with them being quite playable in this configuration. However, you'll likely wish to decrease the veterancy on your T-34-85's to get a bit more availability. The artillery tab is also likely a bit heavy.
Division:
184th Rifle Deck Code: DCRHGoCEIS0GYuOQTsB1hmLjmQIOOVAg45ECDjoKuAAQEa5lA/hWkKsAARw4ABQjccIQllaUI845QnQAGCdAAUPC45QiLjlD+FaVZgPpgi8cGD+FaQJ0ABQRrmWLRAAocgACRmTjkqJOUUcgABTB4AFHTgAQfcABR9wAIMOgASJIVqHD4AEWYD6RaSABQR8cEbNFaA==
Gameplay tips:
Just as with Group Tyurin above, one of the hidden bonuses of 184th Rifle division is that rather than using gvardiya, you get to use strelki, and strelki dp are awesome. In an ideal situation, you'll want to find a section of the map which is heavily wooded or urban, and grind down your opponent using your enormous quantity of riflemen. Your large collection of artillery pieces will ensure any infantry push will struggle to make progress, and with the plentiful anti-tank grenades your soldiers have access to, tanks that attempt to force their way into your defensive position will soon regret it. Special note should be taken of the Valentine IX, which has both an extremely powerful AT gun that will shred any lightly armoured enemy tanks, but also has absolutely no anti-infantry weapons.
britain, pls In the anti-tank tab are 7 ISU-122 heavy tank destroyers. Statistically speaking, in a long range fight between one of these and a Tiger or Panther, the ISU-122 has an advantage. However, as you only have 7 (8-10 if you want to change the phases), you'll want to ensure that you use a bit of micromanagement to keep them safe. +2 vet using both a leader and commander will do wonders for them, and a nearby mortar ready to break line of sight using smoke will be vital if the enemy decides to attack en masse.
Potential upgrades:
The artillery tab is far too heavy on light mortars (although it is really funny having 24 82 mm mortars on the field at once), and it would be desirable to replace them with more useful units. Taking the other M-20 card as well as either the artillerist or Vzvod UPR will let you greatly increase your potential artillery firepower, even as you cut more cards than you add. As well, I left out the M3 Lee because I found it aesthetically displeasing to have up to 9 of them on the field with 3 184th RD battlegroups in a game, but if you think about it, its probably a mandatory inclusion.

Blind Reaction to Steven Universe Episodes 7-8
Okay, so this post is a little theory heavy. Please, please, please avoid spoilers in the discussion. Episodes 1-2 Episodes 3-4 Episodes 5-6 So, most of you guys seemed to want me to continue with the original order, so I’ll just do that. You know, this show has kind of absorbed most of my life for the last few days; I feel empty and incomplete without Steven Universe. What have I become? Remember, guys, no spoilerinos because this is a
Blind Reaction/Commentary. I’ve never seen this show, so keep the discussion spoiler free, please. Even telling me that one of my theories is wrong, for instance, is a type of spoiler because I know what not to look out for.
Before I start, I wanted to show you
a comic that someone I know sent me. It’s really well drawn, and gives me insight on how much people seem to love this show. Anyways, let’s get on with Episode 7!
We…are the crystal gems... - Damn you, Steven Universe. 6 episodes until your theme song got stuck in my head!
- Storyboarded by Kat Morris and Aleth Romanillos
- So they don’t have a writer for this episode. Is this where the episodes start being storyboard driven?
- I love his little helmet too much. I loved riding my bike as a kid. Fun Story! I once got rocks jammed in between my kneecaps when I was biking down a gravel road. Good times!
- “I don’t think they are earthquakes, they’re too frequent.” Yeah, Pearl, I think you might be right. It’s probably just The Plot.
- How do the gems not know about his bike?
- “Just out for a ride.” “In the sand?” Oh, Steven, you poor summer child. Why are you doing this to yourself?
- OH BOY! HERE WE COME!
- Okay, so, while I was looking up gifs about love, I accidentally found this little gem. I don’t know when this will happen but I am very excited because that was fucking adorable.
- Steven she is reading a book she doesn’t give a fuck about your bike. Ask her what she’s reading!
- Oh no Steven just go talk to her! You poor thing. I’ve had crushes on, like, 3 dudes and 4 girls and I never once talked to them because I was too nervous, so I never got to know them. Just find out what she likes, dude.
- Also, I have taken Steven up as my surrogate son.
- “Who were you talking to?” Awwww were they watching? Oh god poor Steven
- “She’s just a girl I know. Except she doesn’t know me. We’ve never talked.” Hey, I mean, you guys have one thing in common then! Why not go talk to her, my dude?
- “You like her!” “Uh...I like everyone!”
- ‘Let’s set up a playdate!” Oh, Pearl. You try so hard.
- “We’ll have to find out her favorite kind of tea.” Y’know, Steven could just ask her these questions. Just go talk to her!
- Oh, Garnet is thinking exactly the same thing as me. Good on you, Garnet!
- “You guys can’t watch this time! It’ll mess up my funky flow!”
- Okay, so, somebody told me to go back and check out the freezer. Is this the thing from the first episode? What is that, one of those glow bracelet things?
- “What’s that?” “Nothing!” Okay, so it’s important to him but he hasn’t told the gems yet. I wonder why he has the bracelet. Maybe his dad gave it to him? But why is he taking it now? Does he think she’ll find it interesting or something? I dunno. Cool continuity, though.
- Aw, he’s practicing talking to her. I’ve done that before. It’s actually made me a lot more nervous about talking to someone than it helped, though.
- Okay, those are pretty clearly NOT earthquakes. Earthquakes do not scream in endless pain. They are holes in the ground. Holes do not scream.
- Oh, Cool! Is that the same as the thing Garnet used earlier? I guess they’re called bubbles, maybe, since the episode is Called Bubble Buddies.
- Woah, that thing destroyed a boulder without even moving! Like it was paper-mache or something. How much power does Steven have that he doesn’t know how to use? Yikes!
- “Hi! My name is Steven!” “Connie.” Yes….. I’ve been waiting for this moment for hundreds of years! Tonight, I shed my earthen flesh and become a hideous shipper from the depths of hell!
- I like the effect on their voice inside the bubble. It’s got a nice ring to it.
- “I’m magic! Well, half-magic. On my mom’s side.” There’s something a little peculiar about the way he says this. Give me a minute to figure out what it is.
- Okay, I think I got it. It sounds less like he’s talking about magic in a mysterious and vague sense and more like he’s talking about his heritage. Like, it sounds like someone saying that they’re Filipino or something. Good Jorb, writers.
- I have no reason to post this, I just think that Connie’s design is really cute and I hope that this ship goes somewhere.
- Her dad is a private security guard. What a mundane and specific job.
- Connie is also taking this whole magic thing really well, all things considered. Once again, is this kind of stuff common in Beach City?
- “So, how long does it usually last?” Oh. Hello there, plot. I didn’t notice you in all this conversation.
- “It, uh, doesn’t seem to want to go away.” Why do Steven’s powers have a tendency to be out of control? Actually, that’s a pretty dumb question. Of course they do, he has no idea how his powers work.
- Also, Connie seems horribly unready to be stuck in a bubble with this pineapple.
- “My dad works for a bunch of different beaches, so we’re never in the same place long.” What’s that? I didn’t quite hear you, did you say “ Don’t expect to see me in too many episodes because the show creators want them to be memorable”?
- I like that these two both seem to have parents who have to move around for work, but Connie seems a lot less...positive?... about it. She seems to be proud of her dad, but wishes he were more maybe? She clearly rewrites her dad in her head from a beach security guard to a cop.
- “But it’s okay! The gems will know what to do!” They’ll probably be too busy arguing over who finished the milk to actually bother helping Steven. No, I am not over their irresponsibility from Cat Fingers!
- Of course the gems aren’t watching. grumbles about responsibility
- Also, something about this really reminds me of this. Man, that game is good.
- “I’ve got other friends that can help!” Why not just get Greg, and ask him to go up the hill and get the gems?
- “That’s Lars. We’re basically BFF’s.” How innocent this Steven child is.
- Oh, Boy. Whatever this is.
- “He and Sadie run the Big Donut.” Sadie! I will burn that name into my skull!
- “They’re crazy about each other.” Oh, man, there has got to be some passionate shipping here.
- ‘My parents don’t let me eat donuts. They have trans-fats.” What a sad, sad life it is without donuts.
- Oh my god Sadie’s warcry here is awesome! Why isn’t she a gem?
- “You know a lot about boats.” “That’s what happens when you hang out at the beach and don’t swim and don’t have friends.”
- Oh, hello…you…. Nice to see you…
- (Guys help who the fuck is this man)
- Wait, wasn’t he being accosted by an older man in the intro?
- “We need a harpoon gun!” Why would this onion-based child have a harpoon gun?
- Couldn’t Sadie and Lars hear them? Why do they need to make poor drawings of what they want now?
- I guess this makes more sense, but I still highly doubt that children in this world come equipped with harpoon guns.
- Okay this is cute as shit.
- Oh...okay, then.
- Good jorb, Onion.
- Also, this Onion kid is so adorable.
- Wait, did Onion just sink the Connie-Steven ship?! NOOOOOOO!!!
- Btws, guys, since I’m positive it exists, what is the ship name for them? Connen? Stevie?
- Um, hey, can I just direct your attention to this? Does anyone care to explain what Weiner in Hand is doing in my children’s show?! Like, not even hidden. It’s dead center in the middle of the shot, and also the only sign with actual writing on it. How did this get through the censors?!
- “Tons of horrible accidents happen here everyday!” Oh, man, it’s been awhile since I’ve laughed that hard at a TV show.
- Oh my god I thought he said “The kiddie coaster” but the cars look like cats is it “The Kittie Coaster”?
- Connie is not amused by this Steven child.
- Oh, the hellquakes pushed them onto the tracks.
- Dude, the guy manning the rides has some good reactions! Props to you, dude!
- Huh. I never expected the show to kill off its main character in the seventh episode. I wonder where they’ll go from here. Will we get a horribly debilitating funeral scene where they bury memorabilia next to the cookie cat fridge?
- “Where are we?” “The bottom of the ocean.”
- Jesus, dude. How do they expect to get out of here, even if the bubble breaks? That’s the bottom of the ocean, where pressure is over 1000 times more intense.
- Oh, look. The B Plot rears its ugly head.
- “It only wants to eat that bright stuff.” Isn’t that the same color as the thing from the freezer? Oh, woah, I’m getting a weird phone call. Some guy called Chekhov just called me. When did he get added to my contact list?
- So, now they’re…
- Uh Oh. I’ve seen anime before. Fufufu…
- “It’s not okay!” Look, this episode is kind of a bit of a reversal of the setup. Steven is too awkward to talk to Connie, but later, Connie finds it difficult to tell Steven what he needs to hear. I’m not sure if this is intentional or not, though. Unlike some of the other setup-reversals, this seems a little vague.
- “Now we’re going to suffocate or starve at the bottom of the ocean, and only my parents will notice because no one else cares about me.”
- “I’m gonna disappear without ever making a single friend.”
- “We could be friends.”
- She dropped her bracelet, so he kept it for her? That’s pretty fucking cute, Steven Universe.
- “I saved it in the freezer, so it would last longer.” Is that how that works? I never knew that!
- “You had soap bubbles in your hair.” The ship returns. I feel its presence. Its power beckons to me.
- I’m not gonna lie, my first thought while looking at this was that they look like they’re getting married. She even has the white dress on and everything! I’m so sorry
- “No, it’s okay. I’m having fun.” I want to live. Please, stop. Please.
- Okay, the bubble popped while they are Underneath the Ocean Floor. They are dead. They are entirely dead. Even with no water pressure, they cannot swim that far in time.
- Also, as a side note, man, it’s good to see a well rounded cast of racial characters.
- Oh, No! Not The Plot Monster!
- “Why is it chasing us?”
- Couldn’t they just, like, throw the bracelet towards the ocean?
- Oh, huh. I assumed Connie would figure out that the bracelet is leading it to them, since she is A Nerd because she Has Glasses And Reads, but it’s interesting that Steven did it. I guess these characters are a little more 3-dimensional than I thought. It’s the little things.
- This
- Oh, wow, did they actually kill it?
- It exploded. Huh. Why did the gems take so long to get to the beach? Isn’t this, like, 2 feet away from the temple?
- “He was incredible!” Hmm…. I think maybe they should give Connie a little more time before she says that kind of thing. After all, she just went from an absolute metaphorical and literal rock bottom to this.
- Oh, wait, I understand. She thinks her life is boring, but clearly Steven’s life is, well, pretty magical. So she’s using Steven as a way to avoid her mundane life. I imagine her parents are pretty boring, then. The laws of cartoons and whatnot. Still, it’s interesting, because clearly Steven sees spending the day with Connie as a much more interesting thing to happen than fighting the giant worm. Connie did also say she enjoyed spending time with him, though…..Hrmmmm……
- Oh well.
- The worm had a gem-thing?
- Garnet did that thing again! With the little bubble! Can only Garnet and Steven do that? I imagine that the other two probably can, but would the things teleport to their rooms?
- Also, what about Steven? Does he have a room, or is the temple only made with the original Crystal Gems in mind?
- “Steven was so excited to meet you.” Pearl you snake!
- “Hey! Don’t mess with his funky flow.” Okay, wow, I haven’t gotten much of an impression of Garnet but that was pretty hilarious. She seems mostly deadpan. I wonder why that is? Also, I just realized, she’s always wearing a visor-thing, like some edgy anime character. We just discussed Scary Shiny Glasses, and we’ve also never seen Rose’s eyes. I wonder if Garnet is hiding something too? Is she secretly a Sharingan user? Does she have Emperor Eye?
- So they still have the new outro. I like it a lot. It adds a lot of flavor compared to just the piano.
Closing Thoughts-
I really liked this episode. It was sweet and succinct. I only wish that the middle section of the episode wasn’t so formulaic. While they’re in the bubble, it’s mostly things happening around them until the timer runs out on the episode. Still, I liked that we didn’t see much of the Crystal Gems. Also, Steven killed a monster without the Crystal Gems! That’s pretty neat. I like this subtle increase in his abilities. Overall, it ranks pretty highly on my top five, but I still don’t think it beats Laser Light Cannon. I just really like that episode a lot. Still, this is a good episode. I don’t remember any music standing out to me, but I really liked the animation for Connie. The glasses add an extra layer of detail that the animators can play around with. I noticed Connie adjusting her glasses a lot, or having it move slightly with her. It’s little stuff like this that makes animation good. Now, let’s move on, shall we?
Episode 8-Serious Steven
- Oh, man. Serious Steven. Srs Bsnes.
- Car alarms. Screams. Looters in the streets. Parents running to find their lost children. The age of mankind has ended. Today marks the beginning of the end.
- Is this Seattle? No wonder it’s a mess.
- Oh god the gems are dead.
- Two weeks La- Two weeks Later? Actually? That’s a new one.
- Woah, did the animation budget just get a boost? That looks waaaay better than last episode!
- “Pay attention, Steven. This is going to be your first serious mission.” So, I guess I was right in that the Sea Spire wasn’t a very important mission.
- Garnet looks like a badass. Also, did Steven bring a guitar with him?
- “Why did you bring that?” “I dunno! I was excited, and it’s mine, and I like it!” Truer words have never been spoken.
- Wow this place is really pretty.
- I like that he cuts Pearl off. He’s worried that she’ll send him back like she promised to do during the Sea Spire episode.
- Actually? Do I really have to link this? I feel ashamed to have His name associated with me.
- This is more dialogue than Garnet usually has. Is this a Garnet episode?
- “Just look at him.”
- I’m already liking Garnet a lot this episode. She seems to be the kind of person you could cuddle up next to at night and talk about anything with.
- “Unbelievable! This was once a gem battlefield!” HRRRRMMMM…….
- So, someone sent me the transcript for the scene where Pearl explains the gem shards to Steven. I wondered then what they needed a military for. Apparently, the gems were involved in some kind of war? There seem to be giant weapons all over the battlefield. Also, this clearly happened a looong time ago. Giant strawberries seem to have been here for a very long time. I wonder if they’re so big because of some weird gem radiation? Like, whatever they used to fight with left some residual here, and it’s only noticeable because there were a lot of gems here? Or Something? Hmm?
- “That’s what I love about the Earth!” As opposed to…. What, exactly? HRRRRRRMMMMMM…!!!
- Okay, so, Garnet summoned a triangle, which I think acts as the key? But I think this disproves once and for all my weapons cache theory. The summoning technique (no jutsu!) that Garnet uses is totally different, and had a completely different effect. So, however they summon their weapon, I don’t think it’s simple teleportation.
- Oh god this is going to be a long one.
- This.
- And This.
- Okay, so, here we go. The first image has some kind of, uh, yellow figure on the right. This person shares a lot of imagery with the middle figure, a silver figure with a lot of similar attributes to the one on the right. They both have DBZ hair, and the triangle on the chest. Interestingly, the figure on the right has no arms… We’ve been told about a “Moon Goddess Statue” before. I’m considering that these are Sun and Moon Goddesses, maybe. They have the appropriate imagery, and both seem very similar. There is also an uncolored orb above the central figure.
- What’s more interesting is the right side, though. That pink figure is clearly Rose. She has the star on her stomach, the same place as Steven, and we’ve seen this same star on the few images we have of her. The figure in the middle seems to be threatening or attacking the one on the right, but Rose is holding something up. Is that a...shield? That would make a lot of sense, since the shield is, as we’ve seen before, Steven’s weapon. Let’s take a look at both the first and second picture now. In the first, the central figure is standing in front of some kind of massive, crystalline structure. She is also surrounded by small diamond-like figures. I’m going to take a big leap here and say that those represent gems, and the gems that are standing behind this figure. But why would rose be fighting against gems?
- These figures. Who are they? Well, the only two groups we’ve really seen so far, for sure, are humans and gems. If the other shapes are gems, then these must be humans. More interestingly, there is still that massive crystalline structure on Rose’s side. So, maybe Rose and the Gems wanted to protect humanity from whatever this Moon Goddess is? Some threat to the earth, maybe from another type of gem, that for whatever reason hated humanity?
- I’m also fascinated by the fourth figure. The figure on the far left is the most detailed figure in the mural. She has the same features as the two figures on the right; DBZ hair and a triangle in her chest. However, there are hands reaching up to her. Very distinctly human hands. I’m honestly a little unsure about this one. Only the silver figure seems to be aggressive, so maybe the silver figure betrayed the other two? Or maybe they’re three separate factions that are always fighting? Oh, man. Here’s the thing, though. This place is old. Very, very old. If Rose was alive when this place was made, then how old is Rose? And how old are the other Gems?
- Ok, I think that’s all I got. I’m not sure if I got everything, but what I’m most certain about is-
- Rose is very old
- She fought against the silver figure
- She fought for humans
- There were gems on both sides of the battle
- Whew! That was a doozy! Let’s get on with the rest of the episode, as I’m sure that it’ll have absolutely nothing to do with this mural and I’ll be stuck thinking about this for 20 more episodes.
- “What is this thing? It’s like a cool, floaty triangle thing?” So, did this place belong to one of the three triangle figures? Is that what they fought for?
- Oh, good. He touched it.
- Man, Garnet’s hair looks huuuge in this picture. It’s bigger than Steven!
- Speaking of hair, Amethyst’s hair is super pretty.
- Poor Steven.
- Everything from the music to the thing with the key to the Actual Triforce on the ground is giving me a Legend Of Zelda vibe.
- “Noooooope! No no no no no, you two are a disaster waiting to happen.”
- “Steven goes with me.”
- So I guess Garnet wants him to test the water, as it were? Are we going to see some deadly traps? Perhaps some like likes?
- “Serious Steven… Pearl, can you put me down?” “Oh, yes, of course.” “It doesn’t work unless I’m standing.” “Serious Steven…activate!” Everything about that scene was perfect. I love the awkward talk between Steven and Pearl, and how their lines overlapped. It was really natural feeling. I wonder who Steven’s voice actor is...
Zach Callison? I’ve actually heard of you before! Yes. Good.
- “But this could be the teacups all over again.” The...teacups? Wait, is that from the intro? It felt so long ago…
- The music when the floor lights up was pretty cool. Good Jorb, Crewniverse.( See? I’m hip with the kids lingo!)
- “We need to stay on the glowing panels.” Come on, Garnet. I’ve played a videogame before.
- Okay, the whole thing failed, but that was totally not Steven’s fault! The room shook! Come on, Cosmic Entities Who Judge Us All. Cut Steven a break.
- This was a really nice bit of animation. There was a lot of impact, too. Oh, wait! I can do a thing!
- Okay, so, most of the impact of something in animation comes from the sound used to describe it. That’s one of the reasons why Hajime No Ippo is so good; They’ve literally sampled Jet engines for their punches. Some impact does come from animation, but in this case, both the animation and the sfxs were really well done, so the final animation had great impact.
- Also, Garnet and Steven are pretty cute together.
- “Be careful. You might trigger a trap with that gun show.” Oh my god, she’s adorable. I love her so much.
- “It looks like there’s lots of triangles hidden somewhere in this room.” Oh, man. I keep having flashbacks to that theorycrafting from earlier.
- Owowowowow
- Oh my god, Steven. I have a bass, you can tune that shit later as long as it’s not broken.
- Also, a ukelele. Once again, a little deviation from the standard. Any other musical main character would, of course, use a guitar; It’s the “coolest” instrument.
- (It’s not, btw. The bass is.)
- Man, Garnet is such a badass. I swear, every time they focus an episode on a gem, they become my favorite.
- I wonder if there’s an Amethyst focused episode. Now she’s the one we know the least about.
- Half of this stuff isn’t even necessary come on.
- TWO WEEKS EARLIER?!
- “Get ready, Steven. This is gonna be intense.”
- I misunderstood the point of this ride.
- “STEVEN! YOU ARE BANNED FROM ALL THE RIDES...FOREVER!”
- “I carried you while you took a nap.” Man, Garnet is really cool and all, but clearly Steven is starting to feel a little uncomfortable. Maybe they should….
- oh…
- OH…
- Garnet took Steven out of the teacups when he was uncomfortable. There’s definitely some relationship between the teacups ride and this place, whatever it is.
- They ended up in the beginning?
- Oh, man. Amethyst and Pearl sound seriously upset.
- “...Which can only mean...well, I don’t know what it means, I-” Amethyst slides in inside ice “This is a deathtrap!” Oh, holy shit. That was horrible sounding. Pearl sounded actually, really, intensely scared.
- “What do we do” “We go back in again, and again, and again.” Well, clearly something’s up. Why not take some time in the only safe place in the entire building to think about what’s going on?
- “I wanted to do this so bad, but now I feel like I’m gonna throw up.” Didn’t he throw up at the teacups?
- “This is just like the teacups!” Ay! My boy! I still don’t know what it is, but at least I knew that something was there.
- “All the rooms are spinning us around so we end up here!” OHHHH…. I feel dumb.
- This is a cool little location.
- I love how Pearl is taking credit for figuring it out when Steven literally just said that exact thing. Like, he didn’t even give them a hint, or anything, he just outright figured it out.
- “Steven already figured that out.” Oh.
- “Serious Steven...Go!” Wow, Garnet is like, the best.
- Okay, this is definitely the face of one of the figures on the mural. So I guess this place absolutely and definitely belonged to one of them, or was made in their honor, or something?
- Is the whole temple just gonna disappear then?
- Or just explode. That works, too.
- So, Pearl can do this too. I assume that Amethyst can. It would be weird if 3 out of the 4 of them could do it.
- Good song, Steven.
- Who Summons Nicolas Cage? Who dares to awaken my slumber?
Closing Thoughts-
This episode had a lot of interesting things going on. It was clever with its plotting, and is the first time I’ve seen a two weeks later non-sequitar title card 15 seconds into the episode. Also, so many theories holy balls! I would summarize them here but there’s so much to talk about. The music was nice, although once again, nothing too unexpected. The voice acting, though, was really good. I especially liked Pearl’s “This is a deathtrap!” That line managed to beat the crystal shrimp one in terms of real and true terror. This is a tough decision, but…. I still like Laser Light Cannon better. I went back and rewatched it, (in the process finding my new favorite song, the one playing when Steven looks through his dad’s stuff), and it’s so strange and abstract but clearly personal that it just
barely beats out this episode. Overall, my new top five episodes are-
1.Laser Light Cannon.
- Serious Steven.
- Bubble Buddies.
- Cat Fingers.
- Cheeseburger Backpack.
Also, my Music Listing-
- Let me Drive my Van into your heart
- Cookie Cat Rap
This was a great set of episodes! I’m looking forward to the next bunch. I’ve been told that they start to get interesting soon, although I think these episodes are pretty interesting already, so I can’t wait to see more. Finally, please leave all discussion
Spoiler Free! Remember, this is my first time watching the show. Please, don’t answer my rhetorical questions, especially with this theory-heavy episode. I know you guys probably know the answer, but keep in mind that they’re in the episodes, and that I’ll get there eventually. We can talk about it then. If I can spend 6 hours a day watching this show, I hope you can be a little patient with me, too. Thanks for your constant positivity. I feel really welcomed in the community. Until next time!

Diablo 3 is NOT dumbed down. A discussion on the illusion of player choice
The phrase "dumbed down" gets thrown at modern titles quite often. This derogative can be about a game's narrative, but usually it centers around the player's ability to customize the way his character plays-- stat points, weapon load out etc.
Sometimes the derogative is justified, but more often it is not a matter of "dumbing down" but more of getting rid of the tedium within older game design. I am going to focus this discussion on Diablo 3 and its predecessors as the topic is apt to its release and serves as a good medium for discussion.
Question of whether games really offer freedom of choice comes up quite a bit in
trugaming, and rightly so, more often than not, player choice is illusionary-- the Diablo series included.
In Diablo 2, upon leveling the player placed attribute points into either strength, dexterity, vitality or energy categories. Seemingly, this familiar mechanic seems to give the player an ability to customize. However, Diablo 2 was also an unforgiving game, especially in the nightmare and hell mode difficulties. This meant the player was forced into distributing their attribute points in the classic warriomage/archer archetypes if they wanted to stand a fighting chance. (For example, a warrior was forced to focus his attribute points into strength if he wanted to be effective) Copy/paste builds that mathematically brought out the best in each class soon became popularized and everybody essentially built their characters exactly the same. On the surface level, Diablo 2 and 1 seemed to offer character customization but in reality, not so.
Onto the skills and spells. People complain that Diablo 3's 6 slot skill limit was a dumbed down version of Diablo 2's skill system which, at face value, seems to allow the player to have any number of wanted skills and spells. Again, this was an illusion of choice. In order to be effective, a player had to focus their spell points into specific spell tree lines because points into the same lineage of spells would synergize and make other spells in the same category stronger-- a necessity of survival. This meant if a player wanted to make his character effective, he would have to limit his available active abilities to a small but powerful handful-- about 6 or so abilities... interesting.
In short, the stat distribution mechanic from Diablo 2 was gotten rid of because it really did not offer any player choice and only made the game more tedious. Similar deal with the skill set but Diablo 3 makes the system better by allowing on the fly respecing for experimentation.
I see this idea being relevant in multiple games and genres, not necessarily limited to just rpgs. I want to hear your opinions on the matter. Let me know.
EDIT: Great discussion, quite enjoyed it. My add code on the U.S server is TJK#1219. Feel free to add me, regardless of what your opinion on this topic was. Let's loot them demons

GochiUsa custom set: Don't let your dreams be memes
The first question that comes to your mind might be:
Why did you design a custom set where there's a real set? Long story, back in April, I made my first custom set
Chuunibyou. I replied to someone in the comments that I wanted to do a GochiUsa set, and I did. By mid April, I have 48 cards designed (4 colours: 9 characters, 1 event, 2 CX per colour). All there's left is to add images to the cards. I initially asked someone to do the images, but that never happened. Late April, I did a 21 cards Mahouka set (text and images) because I wanted to test a mechanic. Then early May, the
real GochiUsa set got announced. That pushed me to finish my set. I picked 19 out of 48 cards that I want to build a deck with, and only did the images for them.
Link to the 19 GochiUsa cards (Updated with my most recent version)
Thoughts on the GochiUsa custom set: There are 2 ways to design a set. One, design certain number of cards with a deck in mind. Two, design some amount of good and playable cards without a deck in mind. The former ensures synergy between the cards. The latter gives deck building options but the deck might not work as well as you think. I initially designed this set with flavours/themes in mind:
- Syaro runs from the
rabbits field - Chiya interacts with levels
- Cocoa the big sister protects
- Rize snipes backrow
- Chino just has Tippy
There are good cards in the deck like
this, or the first effect of
this, but there's no good on play effect to abuse, and Syaro runs from the field anyways. Or there's the
married life effect, but none of the cards really need the power. And the deck has 2 lv3 combos, but none of them draw you climaxes. This became the weakest custom deck I designed, but it is a lot more fun to play because of the flavours. Also isn't brain dead to play. Here are some comments from play testing: Broken cards:
why 6500,
stop siding Memes:
KasumiBomb,
anti-front bodyguard WTF
fairbelieveme:
Syaro+
Anko,
just a freefresh There are 3 cards that I would like to edit after play testing (but never got to that): Lv3 Syaro, why 6500 Syaro, and 2/1 Chiya backup.
Oh and the lv3 Rize has the logo, I didn't update the other cards in the album (yet). Haven't done another custom set in quite a while. Questions and comments are always welcome.

First Time Building a PC
Build Help/Ready:
Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes
What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Gaming (specifically World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV), and general PC use.
If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) Screen Resolution: 1080p Framerate: at least 50-60 FPS Game Settings: normal to high
What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? Max $1000. Preferably $600-700.
In what country are you purchasing your parts? United States
Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).
PCPartPicker part list /
Price breakdown by merchant Provide any additional details you wish below. I wanted to build a PC for my boyfriend as a birthday/anniversary present since his PC is barely functioning at this point. I'm pretty open to suggestions. The only thing I know for sure is that I'd like to go with a micro case, as that is what my boyfriend was planning on switching to when he could replace parts.
I considered doing an intel i7 cpu since I liked the hyperthreading, but I kept running into a compatability issue with the mobo no matter how many mobos I tried. I think it was an issue about the mobo being micro form factor since I didn't have an issue when I tried non micro form factor mobos. But I'm not sure because I only started learning about building a pc a few days ago.
I didn't include an OS, monitor, or external hard drive since he already has those things.
I was also wondering if anyone knows where I could get a custom design for PC cases. As this is a present for an anniversary, I was hoping to add a little bit of a personal touch to it. If you guys have any suggestions on how to make the PC more personalized besides the case, please let me know!
Thanks in advance for your help and input!

$750 budget PC
Hi people of reddit, I was building a PC and I wanted to see if you guys could help me. This is my very first time building a PC, I am coming from a VERY OLD PC(dell inspiron 530 desktop, has pentium processor, 4 GB DDR2, and GT 710)
I need a budget gaming PC with some productivity. My budget is $750 and I am aiming for performance. I intend to buy it all on the weekend of Black Friday/Cyber Monday from online or microcenter
Replace this text with your answer.
If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? I am on a strict budget of $750
In what country are you purchasing your parts? I am buying in the US
Here is my planned build right now
PCPartPicker part list /
Price breakdown by merchant If you note, the motherboard and CPU are changed in price because I am planning to buy them from my local microcenter.
I would like to know how to make this build the best it can be.
My personal constraints -keep DIM slots to upgrade to 16 GB later(I heard RAM prices are going to drop in 2018) -I don't need/want an SSD, this build is oriented to FPS -Nvidia GPU is preferable -Not intending to OC until like 2 months after
Additional Notes: -I will not mind just stuff I need to cut costs on -I have my OS already(I am moving keys on this PC and making this one run linux)
Thank you all everyone and please give your suggestions

Building a new PC w/ old PC's parts [$300-400]
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
When pushing it hard, mainly gaming. I also have an audio interface that I use to record music with but I think as far as computer power goes -- I'd like to focus more on optimizing graphical smoothness.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
MAX I'm willing to spend is $400, but only if I have to. I'd rather spend in the $350 range.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
My computer has shut off on me multiple times now in one day, I have a feeling the motherboard and/or processor are just dying on me. With that being said, I'm trying to move on as soon as possible, though it may be a month before I have the funds available to make a purchase.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Case, Motherboard, Processor -- top priority
Graphics card, extra cooling units -- optional
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
CA,USA
Doesn't look like I'm close enough to a location that would make sense to go pick things up at.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Here's what I have at the moment, along with 2 hard drives+keyboard/mouse/monitors
RAM Graphics PSU Wireless Card Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Eh, try to convince me that it's a good idea and I will. Otherwise, I don't really see the need to.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Not really, no.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Minimal in design and color scheme.
Here's a current picture of the jumbled mess that is the interior of my current PC. Have this mess of cords in mind when selecting a case.
Do you need a copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference for one or the other?
Here's a good question, I have W7 installed on my current computer. If I'm reusing my SSD with the Windows partition, can I just switch that over to my new rig no problem? I've actually never dealt with ONLY buying a new motherboard/processor so I don't exactly know the specifics.
Extra info or particulars:
If you think my graphics card needs upgrading bad, feel free to suggest one. I picked it up a couple of years ago for something like $150.00 but I've been pretty satisfied with its performance thus far. If there are any extra cooling alternatives that you deem worthy of my hard earned cash, let me know with that as well.
Thank you all, I'm ready to kick this old Foxconn motherboard out the window and treat myself a little bit while I am at it.
